What Do You Drink When You Have a Cold/sore Throat?

I know I'm supposed to drink lots of fluids, and normally I do drink lots of water (I'm prone to kidney stones). But when I have a sore throat, I just can't stand water at all.

I'm drinking orange juice and herbal tea, but I was wondering what other people drink when they have a cold.

What can I do next?

Hot ginger tea is my go-to for sore throats and colds, especially with honey in it. I actually tend towards warm beverages in that case, not cold ones.

Hot tea with lemon juice and honey.
Warm apple juice or cider with honey and lemon is nice too.

Gargling with salt water helps.
If your throat is sore - it's because of post nasal drip - so rinsing out your sinuses with a salt water can help too - I swear by my neti pot.
It can rinse out irritants like pollen and the salt water soothes your sinuses.

Chicken soup is wonderful and practically the definition of comfort food.
Drinking warm jello is good too - just drink it before it sets up.

If you're feeling really miserable, and not driving anywhere - you can add a tablespoon or 2 of brandy to your hot tea with lemon and honey.
It may or may not make you feel any better but after a few of those you won't care either way.

I can't drink OJ with a sore throat personally - it just burns.

I like the idea of warm apple juice (below) that sounds nice, or the cider (even better) warmed up.

I drink tea when I'm not feeling well. It just is so soothing.

Right now, I'm not feeling well so I'm drinking warm (almost hot) chicken broth. Honestly, it's lovely. I couldn't touch it normally, but it's quite nice. It feels very restorative. Maybe give it a try. Hope you feel better soon.

Our go to for a sore throat would be popsicles, liquid jello, warm soup and/or broth.

I LOVE fresh lemons in my water and I drink lemon water daily. I have a Swell bottle that I LOVE and I tend to refill with fresh lemon, ice and water 4-6 times a day. If I have any fruit (berries) that need to be used, I add the berries to my water. I also use frozen berries in my water sometimes as well.

Hot or iced tea. Hot with honey is the most soothing to me.
Do you like infused water? I like cucumber-mint, orange-rosemary and cucumber-basil. Just put some sliced fruit and fresh herbs in a glass jar or small pitcher and at refrigerate overnight.

I find that milk soothes my sore throat so I will drink plain milk or hot chocolate. I also sip herbal tea when I get tired of milk.

my go-to is witch tea. fresh sage leaves from the herb garden, with mint or thyme if they haven't died off (not available right now, although the sage is year round.) a couple of pieces of candied ginger. a little cayenne if i have a head cold, but not if i have a sore throat. big dollop of local honey. hot water and steep for at least five minutes.

in a smallish teapot i'll get 3 or 4 cups out of it. you can re-steep a time or two as nothing has the tannins that make tea bitter if you re-steep.

hope you feel better soon.

Stop drinking the orange juice. It's tearing up your throat. It's acidic and your throat tissues are already broken down because the pH balance of your throat is acidic. That's what a sore throat does - turn acidic. Get some Emergen-C Vitamin C dietary supplement powder packets to get the Vitamin C you want instead of drinking orange juice. Put it in warm water, or mix with tea.

In order to help get a handle on your throat, get brown apple cider vinegar, cut it with a little water, and gargle. Let some of it trickle down into your throat. It's nasty. I know. It's hard if you've never done it before. But it is a pH base and will normalize the acidity of the pH level in your throat. It will help the tissues in your throat heal.

Singers know to do this. It's one of the tricks of the profession. So is drinking warm water instead of cold water when you're sick. Post nasal drip tears your throat up too, so take over-the-counter medicine to deal with that issue. The pharmacist can tell you what medicine to take. Make sure that you ask, because you don't want to mix over-the-counter medicines that have the same thing in them. It's hard on your blood pressure, therefore hard on your heart.
