What Could Be Causing Allergies in Central Oregon Now?

I have an almost 22 month old girl who started sneezing profusely 4-5 days ago and I thought for sure she was getting a cold. Nothing ever materialized as far as other cold symptoms and her usual crankiness and horrible sleep that she gets when she gets a cold, so I am left only to believe that she has allergies. She has continued to sneeze and her nose is running clear, thin mucus. I have only been here for a little over a year (in Bend) and I am wondering if anyone knows what environmental factors could be triggering allergies right now, still in winter! Is it juniper? I thought that was later in the season. We dont have cats (i am allergic) or dogs, and nothing else has changed in our household that could be causing it. Just lots of sneezing, which she finds pretty amusing--the wiping of the nose, less amusing. Any thoughts would be great! Thanks!

Hello A.. It does seem to be a little early for Juniper pollen but who knows. We have had some lovely warm days, bulbs are coming up, and ants are invading at our house!

We get allergies from being closed up all winter. Perhaps it is caused by the heater, mold, dust or a general need for spring cleaning. But we are better as soon as it warms up and we can open windows during the day. Good luck on finding the cause of the sneezing!

A.,

I also live in Bend, and have been here 2 1/2 years. This warm weather we're having is causing pollens to form early. You might want to have your little girl tested for allergies. When we lived in CA, my daughter had allergies, but she seems OK here so far. I take zyrtec (now over the counter) and it helps me. However, I don't think it's recommended for children. Check with your doctor.

we live on the westside where the smoke has really been bothering us. could it be the smoke for your daughter too? my eyes are really irritated so i've taken to wearing just my glasses this week. my daughter and i have also had runny noses from it too. weird- forest fires in winters? or field burning? whatever the cause, the cloud cover has kept the smoke down.
good luck!

Hi - Don't have kids, yet 6 more weeks to go, but it could be the cinder on the roads that is causing it, especially since they are finally getting it picked up. Also, when we moved over here I had "mystery" allergies for the first year and a half just because there are different pollens, dusts, ect over here and it takes awhile for your body to adjust. The birds do seem to be getting "drunk" on the juniper berries, so it could be something with the juniper ....
Hope that helps! TC

Yea, I have the same problem, for me its the cinder dust from the roads and its worse right now because they are sweeping it and blowing it into the air. No fun! As soon as the roads clear up ( or you get a air purifier) she should get better. Good luck!!
