What Color...??? More Info Added

I think a neutral color like tan or cream would look good maybe just try some and if you don't like them just exchange it may have to be trial and error, but in my opinion, black can be paired with anything neutral, not bright. hope this helps

I personally love the clean look of shutter-style blinds. I would do them in white. It is very modern, but also has an "old school" feel!

I also agree with other posts...you need some color somewhere. On the walls, in flower arrangements, picture frames. 3 is the golden rule...2 main colors and an accent color.

we have a black sofa also, we although have llight wood floor but we went with a deep red. We also have the Asian theme in out living room so the red and the black tie in together.

Sounds like you have the perfect opportunity! You can go any way you want! Add some bright colors, a little red maybe? What is your decorating style? That has a lot to do with choosing drapes! Are you country, modern, classic? I might have some ideas for you if I knew which direction you were going and what types of knick knacks, frames and accent pieces you have.

You have a blank palette to work with. Black is also a neutral, goes with anything. What's your favorite color? Use it for curtains, some throw pillows for the couch, maybe a vase.
What feeling do you want the room to have? Bold? Calming? Cheerful? Pick a color, any color. Colors stimulate children's imaginations and add flavor to our lives. Don't be afraid to experiment. It's not like you're going to paint the walls chartreuse! (Tho my bedroom was that color as a teenager in the '60s....)
You don't need to fill the room with color if that isn't your thing, but add a splash here and there and watch the room come alive. Just be sure to add small touches all around the room instead of just in one spot. That will keep the eye moving and pull the room together.

Eventhough not usually thought of in that way black is also a nuetral. It matches with any color. It also enhances any color. You could pretty much pick any color of the rainbow to match what you've got. The sofa in my basement is black and my carpet is a nuetral tan color. I did a blue brown black combination that's really pretty. Chocolate brown drapes would be beautiful, the wall color could be a litter lighter like tan or khaki. Seriuosly any color will work beautifully with the nuetral palette you've described. I majored in interior design at my previous school and I just completely redesigned my kitchen and dining room. If you need help I'd be more than willing to help out. Not to mention I have tons of paint samples you could try on your walls to help choose a color.

What is your accent color? The "pop" color you are using in your room? If you don't have one, this is a great opportunity for you to walk around your house and see what color seems to be a consistent trend that can be carried to the living room. Vivid red, orange or cobalt blue are good colors to go with black. If you want to stay neutral, you could go with gray or a bold black and white print. Get some throw pillows, vases, artwork and bric-a-brac in your accent/pop color to tie everything together.

That sounds similar to our living room. We have a light (neutral) wood floor, with black leather furniture. We chose to do the entire room in earth tones (colors of nature). The walls are a green olive, more like a real olive not the smoky colored crayon. We have painting of things found in nature, leaves, etc. Our main colors in the room are olive, black, wine, brown tones. Depending on your wall color, you could virtually choose anything.

If bright bold colors aren't your thing. I would look at starting with Chocolate brown drapes. To tie them together with the black sofa you could add a wide black boarder or fancy black cord tie backs. Then any number of accent colors, throws and pillows can be added to change things up. Tiffany blue or chili pepper orange would look great. You could also use black and white french Toile for a more modern twist on a classic decorators fabric. Acrylic table lamps with interesting shades would give you that 20-30's old Hollywood glamour. Have fun and Happy New Year.

The best contrast colors with black are red and white. I would suggest if you like things plain to get white curtain that appear or are textured. Then a flat red swag to brighten up the room. Small amounts of red will give it charactor while not being too loud!

A black & white toile drape with red a red tie back would be nice. You could put a couple small red throw pills or a blanket on your black couch to add a little color. You could go in so many directions. I like the idea of doing a mustard/gold color. With navy, deep reds as other accent colors. I would do a solid color verses a pattern on your drapes. Look for drapes that have a heavier feel to them, this will balance the boldness of the black sofa. Find accent pillows that have pattern to them with the colors decide on. A bold accent rug will help pull everything together.
