I had an experience similar to Angeles T....especially when I was younger I'd try to sex it up with a beautiful sleigh bed and deeper colors, or the poster bed with rails and the beautiful burgandy comforter that you needed a map to get out of, it was soooooo comfy. But every time, I always went back to the relaxing, quieter tones for my bedroom. I've decided that my bedroom is for rejuvenation and peace. Everything can be bright, active, and lively all over the house with our little guys, but my bedroom is supposed to be my sanctuary where I recharge.
Our master bedroom is a decent size: we have a kind of French country thing going in there with the rustic white tallboy, a lovely armoir, and 2 nightstands that match the tallboy (which is actually "different" and the coolest version of a dresser I've seen, with one half in a glass door, the different accents and drawers...people always stop by to "pet" it if they come in there, which is rare). The walls are a really light green with an offwhite trim on the baseboards , there's windows that look out over our garden and yard, into the woods behind us, and we have very sheer white "things" (not curtains, but to mute the light in the windows), good plantation blinds. The curtain rods match our queen bed (4 poster iron bed with neat accents and little rails all along the head and foot). We have a tray ceiling, so we did green on the walls, a white ceiling, and then the inside of the "tray" (all the sides) it's green, and then the very top again, white, with a great ceiling fan and dimmer lights that have a remote control. There's a walk-in closet for Jeremy, and then the private master bath has 2 doors that open into that, which is where my walk-in closet is. We have some neat pictures, just kind of quiet paintings: one is big, a big bouquet of flowers...one is a lovely picture of a girl (she reminds me of the older sister in Renoir's "2 Sisters") in a garden, and another is from my grandma---someone's idea of the secret garden. It all goes nicely with the green and the view from the windows overlooking our own garden and woods. No TV or computer allowed. There are very few things better than waking up slowly with the blinds open a bit, a little breeze blowing in, and the light shining through the azalea bushes into our room, making a soft green glow like I was laying in my own garden. Very relaxing.
As for themes: I guess we kinda have different themes for the different rooms. My son's room is a "cowboy room", my baby's room is bright and adorable, but transportation themed, the guest room is a peaceful, relaxing beach theme (since we live near the beach), my bedroom is a french country / garden theme (though that wasn't on purpose), and the living room, dining room, entry, and upstairs are "together" but eclectic...tan or wood flooring, beige walls with white trim, crown molding, and drapes, dark espresso wood furniture, chocolate couches, and souvenirs from around the world. The upstairs playroom is a bright....weird color. Orangey-red, with white trim, posters, canvas paintings that the boys made, a framed family tree, "etc". It looks really fun though. I'd rather the "general spaces" look more homogenous, and the bedrooms look more individual to the person staying in there, than everything in the house "matching".
