What Can I Use for Organizational Shelves?

I don't have a lot of money to spend but am trying to organize areas of my home.
I am looking to make homemade desktop shelving units for my desk & counterop area.
I have looked at office supply stores, Walmart, Target etc & can't find anything cheap enough.

Just big enough to organize paper, mail, file folders etc.

Any suggestions of items from around my house that I can use to "make" my own small tabletop shelves?

I am at a complete loss & can't think?

What can I do next?

My Mother is amazingly crafty like that and LOVES to 'make' her own anything out of found/free/recycled material as much as she can...and I have seen her make shelves like what you are speaking out of cardboard boxes that she got free from the grocery store, she cut it to the height that she wanted and then she used wrapping paper to wrap it so it looked pretty and matched her home decor.

And yes, Pinterest is the way to go for more wicked cool ideas! Some people, like my Mother are just amazingly imaginative and crafty...makes me sick! ;)

Local estate sales often have these items very inexpensively priced. If you are crafty, often there are discarded items, furniture that is broken along street on trash day that may have usable drawers, with a little glue, hammer and nails, paint or contac paper, something might work.
My first book shelves were stacks of bricks with painted boards.
I have seen desks made from an old table with the leaves made into shelves.

Try Lowes or Home Depot. You can get scraps of wood there and they are not super expensive. (Some of the thick pieces can get pricey, try particle board). You can cut it to size and paint it however you like.
