My granddaughter has the same style hair, and they spray it with a little water to tame it back down between shampoos. There is conditioner for little folks that helps a lot too. I bet she's adorable.
Hi all. My DD is 15 months and has very, very curly hair. But because of her activity level and climate, etc. instead of beautiful blonde pin curls (like she has after her bath), she ends up with Nappy, out of control Frizz.
Is there anything I can use to help it? I tried a little Baby Oil, but it is so greasy, it's gross and gets everywhere.
I was hesitant about using any Adult products, b/c I was worried about changing the texture or possible damaging it, but I don't know if it really would, so I thought I would get on her and ask you wonderful Moms.
Too bad they don't come out with a Baby Hair Gel or some Toddler Mousse. That would be perfect.
Fellow Mom's this rat's nest drives me bonkers. Please let me know anything I can use that will work.
Many, Many Thanks!!!!

I went for a long time using many different products. I now only use Paul Mitchell Leave In Conditioner. After washing, add some in all over and come through. Then, don't wash her hair every day. Add very little conditioner on days that it is needed after spritzing with a little water first. Never, ever brush her hair, only comb with wide tooth comb when wet only. My daughter now has to die for hair.
I am struggling with the same thing! I just have to keep my daughter's hair in pigtails or it looks crazy.
I don't know what to do when she is in a wedding next week. I don't think pigtails are appropriate. :)

Here is a link to a line of children's hair products
I get my daughter suave products because they're gentler. They even have a kids line. They have a detangler that works great. I would also suggest, if her hair is long engough to put it up so that it doesn't get deshevled during the day. If all else fails I would use a product like pantene for curly hair. I have also been using sunsilk curl tamer on my own hair, and it makes it softer. I don't think that an adult product is going to mess up her hair. If anything it will be smoother. I would also use a shampoo made for curly hair and definately use conditioner.
California Baby has an entire selection of baby hair products and gentle cleansers that are made from all natural ingredients, essential oils, and are very gentle. You can find these products at most Health food stores, like Whole Foods. There is a wonderful detangler spray, and conditioner that might be perfect for your baby girl.
I use Jason's brand hair gel on my son. It's only $2.75 at vitacost.com. Their shipping is $5 for everything. I recommend buying a few things to make it worth your while. I like to buy baby lotions, vitamins, DHA's, baby wash, healthier sunscreens, healthy bug sprays, etc. It's a great website!!! Lots of organic stuff for half the price of Whole Foods.
Johnson's and Johnson's makes a hair detangler that works great as a frizz controller too. I use it in the morning when I style her hair (on her dry hair), and it does great! Also, at the kid-centered hair salons, they have a mousse that works pretty good too (but is considerably more expensive)!
My daughter has curly hair that tends to tangle. I am a fan of the California Baby products. They have a conditioner that you can rinse out or leave in (I think it is called calming conditioner) and they also have a great detangler spray that I use all the time.
Also, as someone suggested, a kid's salon would probably have products that would work for you.
Good luck!
I tried everything my daughter hair frizzes up on the front. She is almost 4 yrs old and I have baught shampoos and stylers. Like you I was picky because I didn't want to much of the adult products. I still havent found something that works... Good luck. I will be ready your responses maybe I can find a solution too.
Hello, I am not sure if when you say nappy that it is kinky and hard to comb. I was also wondering if your DD is biracial? The only reason I ask is because of the description you gave lead me to believe. So if you is not please forgive me no harm intend.
However I have a couple of website that my can help you. I have very curly natural hair.
http://www.kinky-curly.com/ (they have a great leave in condition call knot today)
I hope this helps.
You can use adult products, just make sure they have no alcohol in them. That is where the damage would come from. I had the same problem with my daughter. I went to a beauty supply store and told them my problem and they hooked me up with the right products to use...good luck...
I use Infusium (the Frizzologie one)leave-in conditioner for my daughter's curly locks. I mix it half and half (you might have to play with the proportions) with water and use it in a spray bottle when I brush her hair in the morning. It works just as good as detangler sprays, but it holds the curl nicer without the "crunchy" look of a gel.
It is about $5 for a bottle, but there are often $3 off coupons in the Sunday Paper.
I hope this works as well for you as it did for me! :-)
My granddaughter is biracial. The hairdresser she is taken to, recommended the products by Sun Silk (my daughter even uses it on her naturally wavy red hair) for her hair. It is the PURPLE, straighten up shampoo, straight to perfection conditioner and straighten up 24/7 creme. It made all the difference in the world! My daughter also uses on her a product called PINK, BLACK top, found at Wal-Mart on the ethnic aisle. After her hair is washed, I, too, use the wide tooth comb. If her hair is washed at night, I pull her hair back into a loose ponytail. When she is with her mom, and now that she is older (just turned 5). her mom uses a ceramic flatiron (I am still learning to master it) on her hair, which lasts a week, until she is with her mom for the weekend and a hair wash. Also, every few months, she is taken to the hairdresser for a trim and to have her hair 'relaxed'. My granddaughter will tell me that she needs to go have her hair straightened. With Easter just around the corner, she is right!
I hope this helps. We even have recommended to friends and it made all the difference in their child's hair.
(My granddaughter lives with us and attends pre-school, dance, twirl/cheer/gymnastic classes, church, etc., while her mom finishes up her schooling, finds the area that she wants to live in, and the school that she wants her daughter to attend
You can also try Infusium. Can spray it on or put some in your hands and rub through the hair. Another option is the kids spray in detangler/conditioners.
go online to Carols Daughter.com, and they have wonderful all natural n organic products for babies to adults hair. Sephora and Dillards also carries Carols Daughter products.
Johnson and Johnson has shampoo w/conditioner for curly hair that works great. They also have a leave in conditioner that is just for curls that helps control the frizz and 'nap'.
I know all about the naps! My little man has super curly hair as well. I tried some adult products too, but I just didn't feel comfortable. I take him to cool cuts for kids for his haircuts now and they have this great leave in conditioner that works awesome. It is the circle of friends brand and is called Marisol's melon conditioner. I put it on when his hair is wet and then pretty much daily before we leave the house. His hair looks so cute and it only takes a little bit. I also only wash his hair once a week or so, that way the natural oils can help out as well. I hope this is helpful:)
I use Curls' products for my son: www.curls.biz.
They have lots of excellent products for children as well as adults. Their website also has lots of great information for caring for different kinds of curly hair.
They have everything from shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, and various kinds of gel or mousse-like products for various levels of hold. IT's all natural, and it smells wonderful - like a cupcake fresh out of the oven. You can also request free samples with every order, so you can try out some of the different products to see how you like them.
MOISTURIZING IS KEY. Do not wash her hair every day. My son takes a bath once a week, and I don't even use shampoo, just the conditioner. Different kinds of curls vary, but that's what works for him. I also use a leave-in moisturizer on his hair every day.
I too have quite curly hair. Growing up I could not stand hair spray. It's so rough and does not allow your hair to just be natural. I found a mousse by Tresame (sp?) that is in a black container with green writing for curly hair. It does not dry out your hair, allows the curls to still look natural, does not make your hair hard and crunchy, and it does not take much either. One thing I did a lot as a child was put conditioner spray in my hair with no other product and that helped tame some of the frizz. I highly recommend shampoo and conditioner daily as the products that get left in your hair are what cause the most damage. There are things out there specifically for curly hair but you may have to check at a beauty supply store or a speciality salon.
I use Chi gel or Frizz ease serum type products for my hair. My infant has curly hair and just enough that lotion works okay for right now. I'm curious what you will find that works.
Good luck!
Here is something made by a mom with the same frustrations as you have. She found the solution. I think she is in Oklahoma.
My daughter has the same probs too. I use "JUst for Me" brand hair mouse for kids. It enhances curls, and controls frizz and fly aways. It is not sticky or stiff at all.
I found it at Walmart in the "ethnic hair" isle with the relaxers. In a blue bottle with yellow top.
You don't say how often you are shampooing her hair. Our whole family has super curly hair. We only shampoo once or twice a week since curly hair dries out much more easily than straight hair. If you need to wet it daily, fine, just lay off the shampoo. There are several detanglers/leave-in conditioners on the baby and/or shampoo aisle that are specifically for kids. Finally, don't use a brush - it just makes matters worse. Use a wide-tooth comb while the hair is wet. If you need to use something once the hair is dry, stick with the comb.
I have kinky, naturally curly, hard to manage, etc & so does my oldest son (age 5). I use Aussie spray gel & it works wonders for both of our hair. Also, if thats not good enough, put a dab of Luster's pink hair lotion in her hair after a bath. I use for both myself & my son (I am Caucassion & my son is mixed Caucassion & Columbian) and all you need is a tiny bit. Hope this helps
Hi there. I can totally relate to your story. I am the mother of a now 5 yo mixed race daughter. Since she was about 1 and her hair started to grow, we have faced the same situation. Very very curly soft hair that quickly goes from ringlets to frizz. The solution is to not allow the hair to dry out. I too hate the oily stuff. We have blown thru many products in the last few months but we have found the best ones out there for our kid. I have always used adult products as they work the best. Never had any problems. I would suggest you explore a line called Mixed Chicks. (Google it) It is specially made for curly hair. Also in the last year we have started using Ojon (google it also). Love Love Love it!! We alternate between those products so she gets no build up. Also, as suggested by our hair stylist, only shampoo once a week so as not to dry curls out. The rest of the days, we just "wash" her hair with conditioner. We always follow with a leave-in. It takes some work but she has grown used to it and the results are great. Let me know if I can help. I have become quite adept at managing curly hair these days!! Good luck.
Hi there! I read some of your responses but not all.
My son is mixed and has very very curly hair. I tried to many products for him that I got so frustrated until one day.... I ran out of his lotion that I was using at the time, (Motion Lotion) works pretty good... anyhow, I ran out of it and could not let him go with nothing, so I put some of my biosilk in his hair. OMG - I've never used anything else since. (He is now 2). He has not cried while I come his hair anymore...
Good luck!!!
you can use adult products on children. they won't necessarily be tear free though so be careful with getting in her eyes (which i'm sure you are anyway).
with curly hair, its all about the moisture. keep her hair hydrated by liberal use of conditioner and minimal use of shampoo. leave in conditioners are great. using a spray instead of a cream will help keep the curls buoyant.
Aveda makes some wonderful, natural, products.
hope this helps you!
I would just use Johnson and Johnson's baby conditioner and leave a little in or just use it in lieu of hair gel. Just a little. You can even use a little baby lotion. good luck
-kinky-haired mom and mother of kids with kinky hair.
ps make sure you use moisturizing shampoo too
Instead of fighting the curl, have you tried working with it? Tigi has a product called Curls Rock! There is a lotion and a spray and a mousse to choose from. It moisturizes, tames frizz and really helps. My sister has bi-racial children and she uses Ringlets by Redkin ( I believe) and their curls are adorable! I am afraid a Chi would damage her hair..But you could always blow dry it straight with a blow dryer ( if she will let you) and use a straightening cream. Good luck!
Kids salons should have kids products.
