Wet Ones / Wet Wipes

My mom had my kids today and used WET ONES ANTI-BACTERIAL WIPES, instead of baby wipes on my almost 9 month old daughter. When I got home and changed her, her whole diaper area was bright red and of course she screamed when I wiped her and put diaper cream on. She had no sign of a rash when I took her over there so I called my mom to see if she had one there or maybe ate something different. She said She didn't notice anything and then called me back later to tell me about the "wipes", I just want to make sure that regular diaper cream will heal it, or if I should use something else? Obviously ant-bacterial wipes are way to harsh(it even says on the box not to use on kids under 2). This product is for hands not for "Diaper" areas. What do I do???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called her ped. and talked to the nurse who said if it didn't look better by wed. to call again. She basically recommended diaper cream and baths. The worst part is though she has had at least 6 poopy diapers today, so now I think she has some sort of virus, so that is NOT helping!

Hi J.,

I would soak her bottom in a warm bath, blot dry.

If you have any Melaleuca products in the house, I would bath her using the Gold Bar or the Antibacterial Liquid Soap. After towel drying, allow skin to air dry for a few minutes then apply the Renew Intensive Skin Therapy lotion on her bottom. The Triple Antiobiotic Ointment is wonderful too.

You have to be careful what you use because newborns lack active sweat glands.

I would use a soft paper towel or gauze pads with warm water to clean the area for a few days. Any wipes you use right now, even the unscented ones probably burn like fire which is why she cried when you changed her. Continue to put the diaper cream on too. It should clear up pretty quick. You could also soak her bottom in a warm bath. These things seem to help my son when his bottom gets red and irritated.
You might want to call your doctor to be on the safe side since she used the wrong kind of wipes.

It sounds wierd but the doctors told my girl friend when it happened to her son on arms NOT to bathe her son much because the skin has been traumatized and needs time to heal if you add the chlorine etc. in water you make it worse. The doctor gave her a script so I would call if its real bad. The same child had also used a magic eraser bar at the daycare to HELP clean and got severe burns from it. I found out the chemicals in them are so toxic and dangerous they have law suits against the company that made them. Please update so we know what worked.

I agree -- I would stay away from using any type of wipes -- just use a cloth with warm water to clean. Soaking in a tub would be wonderful for the bottom too. The irritation should go away in a day or two. If it doesn't, I would get in to see the doctor. Good luck!

I have a perscription for Butt Paste that is created by a pharmacist to quickly heal any type of diaper rash. It is awesome and might help to help her heal faster, call her pediatrician tomorrow and tell her the situation and ask for a perscription. Your poor baby has to be so uncomfortable right now. Do anything to help her and don't hesitate to contact her pediatrician or a ask a nurse helpline, this is one of those situations you cant be certain that she doesnt have chemical burns and you dont want to wish you would have brought her in to be seen right away.
