Hey Mama's

I was wondering about anyone out there who has been on wellbutrin xl 300mg and has had any funky side effects?? I had started taking this about 6 months ago for depression and about the last 4 months I have noticed that my hair has started to thin alot. I am in my 20s so hair loss is definitely not normal and I have always had exceptionally thick hair -- and now when I am washing my hair I have clumps of hair that come out. I called and tt my Dr and she said that was not listed as a side effect of the medication? -- I have not been stressed out at all (( the medicine is actually making me feel MUCH better)) however I find it odd that this began right after taking the medicine --- anyone else heard of this happening???

What can I do next?

But it IS one of the potential listed side effects of the medication . . . while not a common one according to Wellbutrin, it still is there (alopecia). Also, many women report it as a side effect to the drug.

Alternatively, your body could simply be going through a cycle of hair loss.

Good luck!

I've been on Wellburtin xl 150mg for about a year. Over the past few months I've noticed a little more hair loss, but I attributed it to age and this unbearable heat.

The FDA requires that all side effects occurring in more than 2% of the population in clinical trials (and once the drug has been on the market) be reported as side effects. Alopecia is listed as a Dermatologic side effect for the product. Wellbutrin has been on the market a long time as an antidepressant and a smoking cessation drug (Zyban).

Here are the FDA approved documents that have side effects listed.

You'll want to search for Adverse Reactions. Also, have your pharmacist do a little digging for you as well. They likely have access to clinical documents not made available to the public and can research if it is related to the Wellbutrin or something else you may need to discuss with your physician.

Wellbutrin is the same ingredient in zyban, i took this 5 years ago in order to quit smoking (i quit anyway 3 years ago, cold turkey) It Did not work, to say the least.

I spent the whole day wide eyed, paranoid, quick to anger, breathing problems, suicidal thoughts, numb skin,i wasnt able to wrestle up a feeling of hope, at all. I spent most of the night crying that i could not find a SOCK!

it took me a few days to shake the depression, then i did some internet research and found cases of ACTUAL suicides that are linked to the use of zyban.

I think it rewires the brain quite well for some people but severely messes up the happiness of the people who never really needed and antidepressant, or misdiagnosed patients, its scary stuff

I looked it up and it indeed says among a million other side effects that hair loss is one of them. I googled "is hair loss a side effect fro Wellbutrin XL" and this site healthyplace.com showed up. Good luck and get back to your doctor with your new found info
