Hi moms,

I am trying to help my husband quit smoking. Has anyone tried the electronic cigatette? If so, what all can you tell me aobut it? Is it an effective tool in quiting? Is it expensive? Any health risks to using it? From what I've heard, all the person is inhaling is water vapor. Would you recommend it to a friend?

Thanks ladies!

it is not real expensive just the starting price after that no. it works but it doesn't if he is addicted to doing something with his hands it might work. he will get some nicotine off of it but not as much as a regular cigarrette. he may be able to do the electronic 3 or 4 times and then have to do a real one. they have less nicotine. my sis in law hated them they are working for my brother and I am like in a nuetral it works but it doesn't as far as recommending depends on how much he is smoking. my bro smokes 4 packs a day and it is helping him. I smoke 1-2 and it helps to a degree but I couldln't depend on them soley.

I think no matter what device, therapy, pill, alternative medicine you use, it all comes down to whether the person wants to quit smoking or not. My mom used Chantix and was successful. My dad didn't like the way it felt and didn't continue the therapy. He has tried everything. Recently he wanted to order the electronic cigarette. We hoped since it was his idea that maybe it would work. It didn't. I think it was around $150. I did some research and there are some concerns about inhaling the nicotine. Google electronic cigarette and you will find a lot of information The crazy thing is my dad quit drinking b.c of a DUI but can't quit smoking. I know it's frustrating him. He coughs so much and it's so expensive. Has your husband talked to his dr. about Zyban or Chantix? Does he really want to quit or is it everyone else wanting him to quit? Good luck. It is a difficult addiction to beat.

Both my brother and SIL used it to quit smoking. They quit back in February after both smoking for over 20 years. They really liked it and it worked for them. I don't know how much it cost, but my brother bought generic cigarettes and they still spent almost $200 a month. Even if it is initially expensive, it can't be more expensive than smoking.

I have several electronic cigarettes and I love them. After investing in several different types I have found that the Janti Stick is the best fit for me. It is a costly investment but not as expensive as my daily cigarette addiction. Don't buy a cheap one that you can buy in convenience stores. They are a waste of money.

I know of two people -one a good friend of mine -who were pretty hard-core smokers and they've quit completely without a lot of complaint by using the electronic cigarette. Both said to make sure you get the original, more expensive one than any knock offs because the knock offs don't work. From what I've heard there are no health risks!

I actually did the laser therapy. It is a bit pricey about $250.00 but I have been smoke free since Feb 16, 2008. If you think about the price then think about how much he is spending on Cigarettes. It's acually cheaper in the long run. They also told me to save for the first month what I was spending on cigarettes and take that money and buy something just for me. Well I went to the dentist and started getting all my teeth fixed. I hadn't been to a dentist in a long time. So now I have a great smile and whiter teeth.
As Bethany said what is helping with the cravings? You are dragging on it but getting nothing from it. Did he ever try the patch? I tried it and it does work but had to stop using it cause I am allergic to the adhesive that holds it on. Also ask his doctor what he can use. They will help him to quit smoking. Good Luck!

My boyfriend and I have both tried it and it is helpful. They are a bit expensive, but cheaper than the daily habit of smoking and the kind we used had a light at the end of it like a cherry so it appears that you are smoking a cigarette. The brand was Gamucci and we got it at Murphy's and I have seen them at discount smoke shops. We spent about $80. It came with a battery charger and we bought extra filter refills.

If they have any nicotine in them it will not be as effective. Tell your hubby to listen to Allen Carr's the Easy Way to Quit Smoking($20 at Borders for CDs you can listen to in the car). Tell him you can still smoke while listening, so have no fear.
It is THE BEST way to quit, and DOES make it easy! I was a hard-core smoker for 20 years and used this method and became a happy non-smoker. It was EASY. Try it! :)

Before you purchase it, I'd check to see if it's an FDA approved medical device.

The FDA approved an inhaled insulin a few years ago, and it's already off the market because too many Endocrinologists and Pulmonologists were concerned about the effect on the lungs.

I understand that the smoking poses a huge risk as well - unfortunately, I've had cancer and have taken a chemo drug known to cause severe pulmonary toxicity - but, I'm very cautious of products that make claims without publicly available clinical data to show how effective and safe it is.

Good luck! Nicotine is one of the most difficult substances for the brain to wean itself from - anyone who's been able to quit has overcome a lot of issues to be able to do it.

I am going to suggest chantix. It is SO worth a try. It completely takes the pleasure out of smoking to where you have a drag or 2 and stamp out.
