Weird Poop-Ewww!

My daughter is 13 months and now able to eat a lot of foods with her 8 teeth! She's been really enjoying grapes cut up into small pieces. I had given her grapes before but would peel the skins off of them for fear of choking, but now am leaving the skins on. So, anyway, she pooped yesterday and the grape skins came out whole. It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Has anyone had this happen before? Is this ok? Should I call the doctor? She had more grapes yesterday so I'm sure I will see it again today. Thanks in advance for any advice on this yucky topic!

no worries, it is completely normal. You think that is weird, feed her raisins and you get to see them reconstitute! Corn does the same thing.

Oh honey, don't worry about that! My 19 month old daughter LOVES rasins and I can't count how many times they've come out whole in her poops!

I know they say kids' digestive tracts are mature at a year, but my son and several other little ones I know have this problem too. I have never asked my doc about it, but it never concerned me. I just assumed it was from their immature digestive systems. Mine is 17 mos and grape skins still come out whole, along with oranges and a couple other things. The only thing I worry about is that sometimes whatever he ate that didn't digest will irritate his skin and he gets diaper rash. He is not prone to diaper rash at all, but every time he eats oranges he poops them out whole and his skin gets burned by them. Obviously, for the near future, oranges are off limits, and I watch what other types of acidic stuff I give him.

That is perfectly normal to do at this age. Both my son and daughter did it. Don't let her have corn yet unless you want the same reaction. My son wouldn't even finish his corn before it was coming out the other end. I didn't think food could travel that fast through the system. I think their digestive systems are too immature to digest the skins.

It's totally fine. My son did that with grapes and oranges. Well, little orange pieces, not the orange peels. :)

Anything fibrous (corn, peas, etc -- and, yes, raisins) can come through intact -- especially through a little body. I've heard that if you eat corn raw, it digests, but that might not be too healthy unless you grow your own.

The thing to be concerned about with choking on grapes is eating them whole (round). No need to peel, them but cut them in half and they should be easily chewed and swallowed. Fiber is a good thing and unless she develops diarrhea or something, fruits and veggies are wonderful!

I gave my oldest (now almost 32) some fresh watermelon juice in a bottle once, and it soon came through her bowels just as it went in, even without any pulp/fiber! I'm glad I was the one who was there when it came out or someone would've been badly worried!

Yes, what you saw is normal. Even thought the pH of the stomach is 2.5, it still won't dissolve everything. Corn is another product that the stomach won't digest. If you pay attention and feed her corn, you will see it whole also. Cherries is another one.
As long as what goes in, is coming out... you are fine.
Don't worry.
**** Oh, and as a warning..... the more she eats, the stinkier they are going to get.
The life of motherhood! Have fun!

Very normal!
Anything that's hard to break down does this (in adults too)!
Corn, edamame, raisins all come to mind.
Just wait until you feed her asparagus, then smell her diaper!

no cause for concern. grapes, raisins, blueberries, oranges, grapefruit, and a variety of others come out looking how they went in. some foods ,like carrots, will turn it orangeish. we always joke about how we know what my son eats because it presents itself later on...

I agree with everyone. It's normal. Every time my child eats mandarin oranges there are remnants a day or two later of the tiny pieces not completed chewed. My child is 4 and very regular, and we still see "things." Just keep feeding your child healthy food.

Yep, I got that same surprise with the corn with my first daughter - my whole family laughed at me for being shocked! I have a 3 year old son who LOVES blueberries and will eat them by the pint. However, the "end" result is very unpleasant for him and a lot of the blueberry skins are still whole, so I have to limit how much he can eat. But like the other ladies said, they are still getting the nutruients so don't stop feeding her healthy foods. My son eats so much fresh fruit I am hoping he's getting some really great cancer protection!

It's totally normal. Kids at this age don't always do a great job chewing their food, and as a result, things don't always get broken down very well before they get pooped out. Especially things with skin or "shells" like raisins, olives, grapes, corn, green beans... all of these things have a knack of showing up virtually unaltered. As she gets older and learns to use her teeth better, you will not see as much of that. However, let it serve as a good reason to keep cutting things in small, manageable bites so that she doesn't choke on something that she is swallowing pretty much whole.

I wouldnt worry about this. The body will excrete anything it cant digest. I can always tell when my toddler has had avocado, corn, and chocolate!

Totally normal. And, they still absorb some of the nutrients out of food that comes out looking undigested. Beans and raisins do this too. My advice is just to not look too closely and keep on feeding her healthy foods. Also, grapes can be made safer just by squishing them with your fingers until they break up. You don't have to use a knife.

Hi A.,

Has your daughter ever had a bout with colic or acid reflux?

The onset of new chemicals in our foods (processing, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, etc.)has changed our chemical makeup in our bodies. Our stomachs are supposed to be acidic to digest foods chewed up so we can absorb the nutrition when it gets into our intestinal tract. Now, foods tend to go through whole because there is not enough acid in our stomach to digest foods....A lot of little ones have this problem because of the overabundance of mylicon and things like that on the market. The stomach has to relearn how to produce acid to digest food.

The common misconception of colic or acid reflux is that there is too much acid, when in fact, there is not enough to digest food so the food that doesn't digest tends to sit in the stomach and ferment and burn up into the esophagial valve causing the pain. Simply put, one dose of mylicon or any antacid can cause this problem...

IF this is the problem, there is a fix. Begin giving your daughter water with lemon juice in it. It adds acid to digest food and it also jumpstarts the stomach to getting used to having acid there again.

Hope this helps!

M.

My daughter will be 2 next month and grapes are her favorite...if she doesn't chew them up enough, she gets grape skins in her #2 as well..... its never caused any problems so I would assume its safe.
