Hi ladies! I had a laparoscopy about a month ago for a dermoid cyst. I feel ok and I can say that I had a quick recovery. I lost a couple of pounds after surgery and I want to keep losing more weight as I am overweight. One thing that concerns me and I forgot to ask my doctor: can I exercise? I could use some abs, I have a big belly. Also the 2 surgeries I had (C section and laparoscopy) left my abdominal muscle very weak. I am wondering if my abdomen will ever be the same as it was. So, those of you who went through a laparoscopy, how did you recover? Did you do exercises to strengthen your abdominal muscles? I really feel out of shape and even if I lose weight I would like to tone my body a little bit. Thank you!

What can I do next?

I'm glad you have had a quick recovery. Whether you can exercise has to do with how healed you are, which relates to how much was done inside during surgery. Look at the paperwork you were given when you were discharged, which should have some guidelines. You say you forgot to ask your doctor, but didn't you go in (or are you scheduled) for a post-oeprataive check-up? That's very routine after surgery and I would think your doctor would insist on that. If so, call the office. If not, call the office anyway and ask about exercise. That's a question that can only be answered by those who know exactly what was done during your surgery, how extensive your incisions were, what the scar tissue looks like, and so on. I'm sure you will be able to exercise at least by the 6 week mark, but there's no reason you can't walk, outdoors or on a treadmill, to strengthen a lot of muscles and get some cardio.

I had a laparotomy which is more invasive than a laparoscopy. After 5 weeks I started walking then worked up to jogging. After about 3 months I was the same as before surgery. It takes concerted effort but if you take your time and start with walking, then jogging, lift weights, squats, then work on your core last you'll be better than before. Just don't let your mind push you faster than your body is telling you your ready to go. Good luck.

your doctor is still available, right? why not call him now?
i'm sure exercise is still a Very Good Thing. just exactly how you exercise should be discussed with your doctor. walking is pretty much universally healthy, so long as you swing along at a brisk pace and don't stop to smell every rose. you may need to hold off on crunches or planks for a while.
but you really need to discuss this with your doctor.
