My baby is 19mo. and loves to ride in the Dune Buggy when we go, but he only gets little puts around camp because I dont feel he is able to be secured like the car. Do they make car seats for off road vehicles? What is the law on it? Does anyone Know? If they dont make these special seats I have the idea if any one has the money then lets get rich$$ LOL

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the "positive feedback" I will be checking it all out. As for everyone else with there comments about my like the one about my son resenting me for saying "oops" on craigs list "BITE ME" 1ST he cant read and in 3 years I not worried about him digging this up from the "bad mommy archives" I love him more than myself and for you to say that is wrong what if you really upset a new mom that could handle that, luckily I am way to strong so strong I must point my finger at you for being so critical. 2nd we camp away from everyone and ride to places less travel and both of my girls grew up doing this but the car seat were made differently and fit better I would just be happier to find the safest one possible because I do care. Wow some of you ladies are something and should think twice. Advice on a car seat is all that was needed.

I don't know of any special carseats for that, but please stop referring to him as an "oops". He will resent you for it later and always feel a little bit unwanted. Call him a "bonus" if you have to.

Funny - I work for a tradeshow management company and we have 2 baby shows and 2 automotive aftermarket shows. Recaro is one of the few exhibitors we have that cross over into both markets. I would suggest contacting the company directly and asking them about the fit given the dimensions of the seat in the buggie. www.recarousa.com
Good Luck!

Hi H.,

We have been unable to find an infant/car seat for our Rhino, so we strap our car seat into the front seat and Mom takes the backseat while Dad watches over little one and controls his speed to little ones needs. To date, we have not had any Ranger's show concerns in Dumont for our rigging.

The problem does not seem to be so much in the infant seat as the anchoring of the vehicle. As well, my concerns are with the speed, bumps, and jostling around of the little one. I always worry about "shaken baby syndrome". In most cases, little ones love the ride and the vibration puts them to sleep.

We've been taking our kids camping and off roading since they both were infants. They are now 8 and 14. We've always just used the regular car seat and buckeled it in snuggly. And I never took them in the car until they were over a year.

We have a large group that we go to the desert with and lots of little ones. We have all always used our regular car seats and buckled them in very snug. Never had any problems with it and my kids were the ones that always fell asleep on the rides! Have fun and be Safe!

H., is it just me or what. Do you really think it is safe to put a 19 month old in a dune buggy in Glamis other then just in the camp area? I also go to Glamis. I know you wouldn't be going crazy out there... I don't know what the laws are. Just wanted to comment.

I've seen car seats in golf carts but not in dune buggies. I don't know how you would secure a seat in the harness straps of a buggy seat... I have seen friends put little ones (3-5 yrs) in with blankets & pillows but that is not actually safe. We have child-size seats in the back of our buggy, but still too small for your baby. I wouldn't take a 19mo. in the dunes, but I'm sure you can figure a way to putz around the camps with him.

I loved your "oops" comment; I thought it was adorable. We have an "oops," too. And he is the love of our lives! :) I think me and all 6 of my siblings were "oops"s and I couldn't resent my mom for a minute, she is the best mom ever! Hope you find a good solution for the car seat!

Being a Jeeper that helps look after a now 3-year old redheaded spitfire, I can say that his dad and I have had no problems whatsoever bringing him out on the trails. (Granted, we don't do anything too extreme, so there is minimal chance of roll-overs.)

There are a few things that we *do* do. First of all, a good car seat is essential. I will get the brand of the one he's got and post later today- it's transitioned nicely from full-on car seat to booster very nicely and provides back and neck support. Just to be extra careful, when we're going on bouncy trails and/or think he might nod off (yes, this boy can fall asleep off-roading!), a U-shaped travel pillow provides extra neck support.

Secondly, because my jeep is a soft-top which I usually keep down unless the weather's bad (Living in the desert means lots of clear skies!), a helmet is mandatory. Even when rollover risks are minimal, those tires can kick up rocks and pebbles, especially when managing rougher terrain.

The little man's been on the trails since he was a little bit older than your son and loves every minute of it! I've even used the promise of future Jeep rides as encouragement to behave. (Hurray for positive reinforcement!) Make of that what you will and have fun out there. ;)

P.S. As an "Oops" myself, I prefer having a sense of humor about how I came to be. Sometimes sugar-coating things too much can be just as hurtful as being mean-hearted. I'd rather be referred to as an "Oops" or "Surprise" with a smile or chuckle than a "Bonus" or "Extra Blessing" through a grin with gritted-teeth. Just my $0.02 ;)

We are building a baja bronco for our family and will include our 8 1/2 month old on our excursions. It's a PERSONAL choice whether to bring your babies along with you and we made the choice to do it and to look into safer car seat. Check out the Wing Preemie (http://www.prpseats.com/store_seats.html). 5 point harnesses are available. Our friend that is building our bronco also highly suggests a neck brace. You can find those at any gear shop. He used one for his son until he was 4.

Have fun out there!

Many of the companies that make seats for race cars also make baby car seats. Ricarro is one that comes to mind. They make VERY safe seats with extra features like a 5-point harness. Maybe you could look into hard mounting it into the vehicle. Hope that helps.

We go to Glamis all the time also - I have a 15 month old son. I see people with car seats in their buggies all the time but I would NEVER take my infant out with us. Have you seen how crazy people drive? They are out of control and intoxicated half the time. Seriously, you may be in control but that doesn't mean the people around you are.

anything that has a motor in it, its against the law for a baby with out the right car seat in it to ride. Plus at 19 months, do you really want him to go faster than a put put, thats insane if you go any faster, not sure bet I dont think there is going to be a real call on infants seats and dune buggys,

Shame on you mommies for passing judgement. It obviously is your insecurities as a parent that you feel the need to point fingers at others. So be it if it isn't a "good idea" to you for children to ride like this. She isn't asking to take your kids. You shouldn't pass judgement on a mom and her decisions. NO mommy is perfect and as if parenting wasn't hard enough....a mother should not have to defend herself. After all...she is asking for the safest way to do it, not your opinion. Shame on you! And for Pete's sake...don't take such offense to "opps," if she REALLY felt that way she would have made different choices regarding that baby...it's obviously her sense of humor. Why are you so quick to point fingers? Sorry H....I'm sorry you had to read that junk.

I can't imagine anyone making a carseat for an offroad/dune buggy. That's ridiculous. those things are so dangerous, I can't believe you'd take your 1 year old on them. I can see maybe if a child was a little older, but what if something happens - that's the kind of accident that is preventable - unlike a normal toddler fall, etc.

Are you really willing to trust your childs well being to some potentially loaded, testoterone driven person. Been there, seen the drivers. If you're ok with it I'd check with your doctor. When I spoke with mine re a similar issue he asked me not to do things that were as concussive until my child was a bit older.
