Wait till evening they are way less active then, Spray from far away with the wasp spray - they die pretty fast once you hit them.
So my boyfriend and I have been staying at a friends house helping her move in. We noticed that there is a wasp nest with many wasps in and around it by there front door. She is very alergic to wasp stings. Do you think it would be easy to call a professional to exterminate it or should we try it ourselves. They don't want to spend a lot of money for an exterminator but they want it gone. If we did it ourselves how should we do it?

Bengal Wasp Spray is my go to to get rid of nests. And we get them every year under the front porch eaves.
Wait until dusk/almost nightfall when the wasps return to the nest and spray it down. Read the instructions - do not stand under the nest! Stand at angle away from it. The wasps will literally fall dead from the nest. Sweep them up, and early the next morning knock down the now poisoned nest.
I also spray my eaves down once a year to prevent them from building during wasp season.
I know that wasps serve a purpose, but I am mildly allergic to them and of all God's creatures they just terrify me.
Just buy a can of spray, but ONLY spray the nest at night. They are active during the day and will definitely attack you.
We had a wasp nest one time, we just bought spray and my husband sprayed it, took care of it.
It is just a wasp nest... I understand if she is allergic but there really is no need to call an exterminator.
Go to home Depot and get the spray.. it shoots a good steady stream and gets rid of them. I forget the brand. We have them around here, just point and spray.
Don't attemp to go inside when you spray, go the other direction. They will get mad. It is best to spray at night when they are not as active.
The stuff from the grocery or hardware store work great. If she only has one entrance into her apt and the nest is close to that door. You will need to spray and then leave for a few hours. Do not attempt to spray and then get through that door.
You just need to buy a can or two of wasp spray and after that remove the nest and you shouldn't have anymore problems with them. Have your friend keep one can of spray in her house at all times, so if she finds more, she can get rid of them right away.
We use spray all the time.. most of them will shoot a distance of 10 feet or more, so you don't have to get up close.
The best kind we found is actually a FOAMING spray... as you shoot it, it goes into a large glob of foam, so it envelops the nest and any wasps on it... that coats the wasps much easier, and they can't come after you.
It is called Bugout Foaming Wasp and Hornet spray, and actually sprays 22 feet.
Good stuff!
Sounds like you have great advice.
For HONEY BEES ONLY - If it were a swarm of honey bees you could call Cook-DuPage Beekeepers and they will come out for free. Then the beekeeper can use the swarm of bees in his/her hive.
Take care

Try Pyrethrin spray. Kills instantly. It can be a bit expensive & I've only seen it so far at Tractor Supply. After spraying, then knock the nest down & discard or burn it if you can.
Just get your own can of spray. Keep your friend away from it while you (or your boyfriend!) spray it. Preferably in the evening when they will all be in there. Basically spray well & run! Since it's by a door, I'd use another door for a day, just to stay away from them.
Then knock it down (careful!) and get rid of it.
If you can get within 5 feet of it, safely, and wear goggles so no spray accidentally gets in your eyes, then you can buy one of the sprays made for this and it will take care of it just fine.
Make sure to spray first thing in the morning when it's still a bit cooler so the wasps are asleep still.
