I wanted to share a very frightening problem that is hitting our Lawton middle high school girls. I have recently found out that there is an epidemic of "cutting" occuring with 8th grade girls.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice and comments. I currently have my daughter scheduled to speak to someone about what is bothering her so badly she has resulted in cutting herself. I wanted to let people know because this problem threw us for a loop.

Injuring yourself on purpose by making scratches or cuts on your body with a sharp object — enough to break the skin and make it bleed — is called cutting. Cutting is a type of self-injury, or SI. Cutting is more common among girls, but guys sometimes self-injure, too. People may cut themselves on their wrists, arms, legs, or bellies. Some people self-injure by burning their skin with the end of a cigarette or lighted match.

When cuts or burns heal, they often leave scars or marks. People who injure themselves usually hide the cuts and marks and sometimes no one else knows.

Self-injury is not new. It's also not a very common behavior. But lately people are talking about it more. As guys and girls hear about cutting, they may feel curious about it and why people do it. Because it seems a little bit forbidden, some younger teens may think that cutting might make them seem daring, grown up, or popular.

With all the talk about it, cutting can almost seem like the latest fad. But cutting is a serious problem.

I cut and pasted that from kids health. My younger sister did it for a few years. The way she explained it to me was that she was just so full of so many emotions that cutting herself made her feel like air was being let out of a balloon inside of her. She got on an anti anxiety medication and started seeing a therapist every week. She is doing much better. It is a very serious problem, which could one day lead to suicide.

It is becoming more and more common with middle schoolers across the country. My niece did it once and everything flew into motion. She is now on meds and more counseling. She is not in the KC Metro so I know it isn't a problem at only one school.

Check out this link and please peruse the rest of the EFT website. You can even search for a practitioner near you. They've had much better results WITHOUT MEDS using EFT for this kind of problem!

That is not really anything new. Girls have been doing that for a very long time. There were tons of girls that used to do that. I also know a lot of guys that have done it. A little insight on why they do it is b/c they can't deal with the pain inside of them so they create pain by cutting themselves so they can control that. If they aren't a "real cutter" then they are just doing to b/c they think it's cool. I used to carve my initials in my ankle when I was in HS. It was just something that we all did. If the person is a cutting b/c it's cool right, it will go away. If they aren't they need to get some help. I know it seems really crazy. Well I hope this helps you understand it a little more.
