I'm certainly not an expert, but I did recently help my dad out by selling my grandma's collection on eBay. I didn't have much luck selling the pennies, nickels, dimes or quarters. The only coins that seemed valuable to people were American Eagle Silver Dollars (I got an average of $15 for each of these from the 90s) and coins that were special issue coins, like a coin issued for the Olympics or Constitution anniversary, etc. Also, they are much more valuable if they're in mint, uncirculated condition. It's time consuming, but what you might want to do is go onto eBay and search on your coins. The ones with lots of bid activity would be the ones to keep. With the rest, you could try taking them to a coin dealer. That's what we did with the rest of my grandma's collection and he just offered a lump sum for all of them (not sure what it was, but it wasn't much). Hope that helps a little!

Coins dated 1964 and earlier were still made with silver. As for the pennies I only collect the ones with the one cent written on the back. My other suggestion is to go to the library.

Is this for you or your children? If your children want to collect coins I would say let them choose the ones they want. My sons both have their own special boxes with coins they collect. They got some from their dad and my dad that are good ones and their collections are worth about $250 each. Of course, they also have a lot of coins that are not worth anything but they still really like to have them. The most fun is to take them to places where they have coins for sale and letting them choose. It is also fun for family members to give them one or two neat coins for birthdays and such, that they can add to their collections. As the collections grow, they will probably end up with at least a few valuable ones. If the collecting is more for you then I would suggest going to coin shops or shows in your area because you can see what people have out for sale and how much things are worth. That way you will get to know about values of different coins and what to look out for when you go to buy yourself.

I want to sell some of my coins and I visited ebay last night and checked out some of the coins. I started in the morgan silver dollars and moved on to the buffalo nickels. There were some coins worth a lot and some barely above face value. I am going to buy a book on coin collecting and values. There are lots of coins on ebay (thousands)but I think it might be easier to find the values of each with a book. Good luck.
