Want to Learn Photography

Any suggestions for local photography classes? I have found that getting photos taken of my kids at all of the important milestones is getting quite expensive. I want to learn how to do it myself. Obviously not looking to make a profession out of it but still be good enough to blow up some of my own shots to be framed and hung on my walls. Even looking at investing in a digital SLR camera (no, I don't know exactly what this means, I just notice that that's what all the photo people use!!!) LOL!

What can I do next?

Hi C.!

It is funny that you posted this because I am a photographer who is interested in starting a small photography class just for parents to learn how to take good images of their children with their point and shoot cameras. The first tip is that it is all about the light! So if this is something you might be interested in doing let me know and I will put you on my emailing list or give you a call when I get it all organized, plus I would like your input as to what you would like to learn and how many classes etc. etc. you can email me at ____@____.com

You can try ACC. The key is that you don't need lots of equipment. I actually bought my supplies and taught myself. I'm not good enough to charge ppl but get really good quality pictures for myself. Although I have yet to take any of my son who is 7 mo.....cant seem to make the time:)

Equipment bought: good camera (Bc of cost, I didn't buy a digital), studio lights, tripod, background. I actually like material scraps that I bought at hancock's on clearance for the background.

When my daughter was born, I bought a book called How to Photograph Your Baby by Nick Kelsh. You can order it on Amazon. It was supposed to be for my husband, since he's the photography buff in the family, but I've really learned so much. Just great simple tips that are helpful for children of all ages.

Regarding getting the SLR, I've had a series of point and shoot digital over the years. Which are great for just having in my purse to snap pictures occasionally. But when I really want to take pictures of the kids, I always go for hubby's SLR. It's incredibly fast and you can take a lot of pictures in quick succession. Which for me is key, 'cause my kids move around a lot!

JUMP INTO IT!!!! Just take pictures, that is a good start. Digital cameras are especially helpful, because you can download and erase. I took a few courses through ACC in manual cameras and development(so great!!) and also a digital class. I hope you enjoy catching your special moments, your on your road to becoming a shutter bug.

Hi C.,
A photographer friend of mine in Austin recently started up a website with advice & information on taking photographs of children. It might not be exactly what you are looking for, but it's a cool site. Check it out at: http://www.shootthebaby.com/
