I'm wanting to redo the childrens bathroom. I have one of each, so I need something both would like. They've out grown the bugs & froggies that were are in there! DS is 12, DD is 8. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I like the idea of NOT wall papering and use the wonderful ideas that ya'll gave to decorate in items like pictures, towel and toothbrush holders! I will let them decide on what to do as far as items. So far it's a toss up between the beach & jungle! Thanks so much!

Any ideas on how to get the wall paper off?!

I would let both of them help you decide. Take them to Lowes or Home Depot. You would bs supprised how much input they can give you.

Ask them! I never realized my now 20 y/o is so deathly afraid of clowns from me making my baby's (his) "Better Homes and Garden" first room! Everything was gorgeous clowns!

Ask and negotiate (you have the last of maybe their 3 choices?) and Kudo's for putting this out here!

My friend whose son and daughter share a bathroom has a really cute surfing/beach theme. She has an adorable picture that's enlarged and framed of her kids' feet standing together in their flip flops. Also, she has bath mats in the shape of surfboards with matching towels and shower curtain. (I bet you can find them online somewhere) She also has a jar of seashells and a pegboard hanging up with swimsuits and goggles on it. It really works well for a boy/girl combo. Good luck!!! --M.

magnetic paint with a neutral color that they like...then they can put up whatever they like with magnets and change it as often as their tastes no doubt will change, without trashing your walls or needing to redo it again...good luck!

When I changed out our bathroom- my kids were too old for Pooh- we went shopping for a shower curtain first and then built a theme around it. They picked a wild life curtain from Burlingtons and now our bathroom is a safari adventure!

Dear S.,

This answer is based on my own childhood, not on my experiences as a parent -- I just wanted to note that when my mother redecorated my bedroom when I was about 12, and didn't give me much input into colors or much of anything else, it didn't feel very good, and looking back as an adult, Il think my mother was overly controlling of how I dressed and other decisions where she could easily have afforded to give me more control. Without the chance to exert control in areas of my life that were of little consequence, I instead exerted control behind her back in much more dangerous ways -- around 12 I smoked my first cigarette, and things got much worse from there. So, this is just to suggest that kids benefit from having input and perhaps this can be a chance for them to learn about working together and compromising to get something they both want. I think the key isn't how much control they actually get, but how much input they FEEL that they have. Can they agree on a color? One color each? Could each choose three motifs and see if you can come up with two that are complimentary?

Best of luck with the redecorating -- and I don't mean to say I think that parents making redecorating decisions lead to juvenile delinquency -- I just meant to say that this seems to offer one opportunity for sharing control with the kids.

I don't know what the decor in the rest of the house is, but I really love jungle bathrooms. You can get classy, adult-ish animal statues/soap holders etc, or you can go a bit more character and childish with the animals. Do an animal print walpaper with solid colored towels and contrasting colored washcloths/ hand towels. If you want crazy, you can go with Zebra walls with black/white towels or leopard walls with brown and tan towels...or you can do a jute paper and have the animals in the statues/accessories...just some ideas.

If you really want to do wallpaper then I would just take the kids to the wallpaper section and let them choose within reason.

Or you can paint the whole room or an accent wall if that is easier! Let them pick out the color. Pick out accessories around the color.

I dont know if your children are into the monkeys I see EVERY where these days, but i know my daughter is. so, as I am about to redo our bathroom and she always gets to pick the theme - we are going with the monkeys. i get to paint the walls a neutral tan/beige. I get to use the same beige in tile, we can still keep the green throw rugs and towels. and she gets the fun looking monkeys....

I hope this helps.... have a grand time with the kids redoing your room of choice. After we are done with the bathroom we will work on our spare bedroom and YES she will help with that as well...... its so much more fun when she is involved in these things... and we make tons of memories.

from a resale stand point, "don't wallpaper" . since you are going to re-do that bathroom anyway, take the wallpaper down, opt for white or a very nuetral light color and then decorate it the way you want! when people are buying a home, they are not interested in having to "take down" wall paper. painting is relatively easy, wallpaper is a chore! and wallpaper is outdated! most people don't want wallpaper anymore. trust me I just sold a house that had a lot of wallpapered rooms. Everyone wanted "me " to take down the wallpaper and paint! the new home I bought doesn't have a single wall of wallpaper, all paint and I plan on it staying that way!
