My son (10 months) used to sleep till about 7am. For the past month he has been getting up at 5:00am. We have tried everything: going to bed later, going in at 5am (when he wakes up) and telling him that it's not time to get up, rubbing his back, a noise/sound machine.....anyone else have other suggestions? He takes two 1 1/2 - 2 hour naps each day.

What can I do next?

I'm dealing with the same thing with my 16-month-old. He was up at 4:15 this morning!
For us, I think it's mostly the earlier sunrise that's causing the problem. I'm working on getting dark curtains up.
Another thing that helps is to feed him right before bed. Oatmeal is a great pre-bed snack: it fills him up and helps him stay full longer.
Good luck!

Hi A.,

Looks like you already have some good advice. Sleeping is a habit, so therefore the more he sleeps, the later he will sleep in the morning. Sounds strange, I know, but it's true. I take care of a 20 month old who started to get up exceptionally early also...we had just taken away her morning nap, so decided to start giving it to her again...this solved the problem.

Good luck!!!

This is a horrible habit but when my daughter did that I would give her a bottle/check diaper and put her back in her crib with her bottle and she would go back to sleep. I was not about to get up at 5am... I had to get up at 7 or 8 for work but I saw no point in any earlier. Being a single mom I was desperate for sleep. Thankfully my daughter didn't do this often.

it seems like most babies go through this phase....i would also try giving a bottle, but i also would bring my girls into bed with me...normally it helped them sleep a couple more hours if nothing else was wrong...or get up with them and cuddle and watch tv...for us it was a phase that she out grew eventually.

When kids are overly tired they will continue to get up earlier and earlier. You need to make sure you child is taking his two naps during the day. The first nap starting about 1 1/2 hours after getting up in the morning. And the second starting around 12-1. Each nap should be around 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours. And then you should be putting him to bed at 7-7:30. This is all from my sleep book. Good Night, Sleep Tight, by Kim West. I would give that all a try and maybe pick up the book. It has worked wonders for my two kids. So once he gets caught up on sleep he should start to sleep later. Also teething can cause early rising. Hope this all helped.
