Do any of you have any great ideas for things to put on top of waffles and pancakes that is not full of sugar? I don't like feeding my kids syrup too often because it is straight sugar. If anyone has a low sugar syrup recipe or a fruit syrup recipe I would love to have it. Really any ideas are welcome. Thanks so much!
Thanks everyone! These are some great ideas! I'm excited to try them! :)

Whipped cream :)
Try blueberry (or strawberry or etc.) compote-you can cut the sugar down or remove completely if you want. The foodnetwork.com has a blueberry compote recipe you can use, and just cut the sugar on.
Apple sauce (there are lots of flavors out there now, that are no-sugar added).
Any of the no-sugar fruit spreads. There are lots of them out there now.

I have 5 or 6 different flavors of agave(vanilla, maple, almond, raspberry, irish cream...yum) and we use the teeniest bit on pancakes because a little bit goes a long way. They get to pick their flavor and I do the squeezing!

Sliced banana, apple, kiwi, or fresh or frozen berries, plus some whipped cream (I would go for the real dairy kind - spray can is easiest - rather than whipped frozen topping like CoolWhip)

We use agave nectar, while it still has calories, it does not affect blood sugar much at all = no sugar high! And it is a natural product, in case you are worried about strange sugar substitutes. We buy the amber agave, which is darker, and my kids can't even tell the difference. Also, we top our pancakes, etc. with sliced almonds, pecans or walnuts. Good fats + protien. I've noticed that I do not get the "sugar headache" when we do the agave nectar and nuts for toppings. Whole wheat or partial whole wheat instead of white flour also helps. Good luck!

My family takes canned fruit and just blends it (often in the same jar it's been canned in). It makes a really yummy puree that works perfectly on waffles and pancakes. We've done it with peaches and apricots that I can remember, but I imagine it would be great with anything canned. Nice thing about it is that it only has the sugar you added to can it.
If you don't have any canned fruit, pretend. Get some fresh, cook it just long enough to get the peels off (blanching works best - essentially dip it in boiling water for a few seconds), and then blend it. If the fruit isn't sweet on its own, add just a little bit of sugar. The fruit's natural sugars should make it sweet enough to satisfy.

i put agave nectar and blueberries(strawberries, bananas, raspberries, etc) on my daughters waffles. Agave nectar is sweet, and does have sugar but its the lesser of two evils, its pure and natural, and very low spiking for the blood sugar.
sometimes i use real, grade b maple syrup, which is also much better than fake syrups, or sugar laden jellies

NEVER buy high fructose corn syrup (which is 95% of "maple syrups" out there)
PURE maple syrup is really expensive, but really, you don't need that much to sweeten your flapjack... AGAVE nectar is superb as well! A little pricey, but worth the natural sweetness :)
Crushed berries are awesome too! That way you're already getting your grains AND fruit at breakfast (just buy frozen fruit, and squash them in a bowl after warming) mmmm!

My kids like me to cut up the waffle and give them a yogurt to dip in. It cuts down on the syrupy mess and the sugar intake. I spread cream cheese and or strawberry preserves on my own.

My mom loved putting cut up fresh strawberries on her waffles. I know some people who use jelly or jam, you could use the ones in low in sugar.
Yes, syrup is pure sugar, but I don't mind using it since it's an all natural food.

I cook strawberries down sometimes. I have used frozen or fresh, add a little water and corn starch and cook until they are soft. I have used peaches, or mixed in blueberries as well and I'm sure apple would work great.

How about naked fruit?
Blueberries or sliced strawberries or . . . . any fruit.
Maybe a sprinkling of cinnamon or nutmeg or vanilla on top.

Hi honey,
Here's what we do:
Option #1: When fruit is fresh, we make our own syrups and jams, so we know what's in it. On pancakes, I put applesauce for the bulk of the topping, topped with a moderate drizzle of syrup. All the gooey "yum" factor--much less sugar--no corn syrup.
Option #2: Husband likes to take some fresh or frozen berries (whatever we have handy, and whirr it up in the blender with some honey. That stuff is darn good, too! The no-sugar stuff always gets the evil eye from me--I don't want my family eating chemicals!
Best wishes and blessings

My dad and I liked either fresh or canned peaches on our pancakes. Or we liked whipped cream and strawberries. My FIL makes his waffle batter with applesauce so it sweetens it that way, instead of using syrup. A lot of the lite syrups dont taste bad, but if your looking for a sugar free syrup I have found its trial and error. Some are good, some are horrible.

I'd try an "All Fruit" type preserve (sold next to the jellys/jams at the store). They are literally just fruit - no other "stuff" added - including sugar.

I use honey for waffles and pancakes, and for lots of things! PB & honey sandwiches, to sweeten smoothies and cinnamon toast, pretty much anywhere sugar would go, I use honey. It has so many health benefits, so you can feel good about giving it to your kids (as long as they are over 1yr). It goes great over any fresh fruit on top of waffles, or just butter, honey and cinnamon on waffles is yummy too.
I never really ate honey before having my daughter, now I love it, and so does she! The health benefits are amazing, check it out!

One of my favorites is taking fresh or frozen blueberries, heating them up in a saucepan until they are nice and juicy, then add 1-2 Tbsp of ground flax seeds, which thickens up the mixture, adds good omega-3's, and is really yummy with no added sugar!
