Consider that the dose might not be right for him and start there first.
My son takes Vyvanse with much success.
There are lots of good ones out there. You just have to experiment with dose and type to find a combo that works.
My grandson started taking this about 10 days ago & had terrible migrains. They are going to try something else. But, I was wondering if anyone else had really bad side effects from this or any other ADHD med ? Has anyone found a "good" one ?

Each drug works a bit differently for each kid. My son has been on Daytrana (a stimulant patch) since April, but it started losing its effectiveness in the past few weeks. At my husband's suggestion I asked our neurologist if we could try Vyvanse and he was happy to give us a scrip for it. My son started it last Friday and it seems to be working quite well, but he does seem to be a bit more emotional on it (not angry/violent, but cries easier--not a lot--just more than is typical for him).
He also has a decreased appetite, but not as bad as it was when he was on Daytrana. He cannot swallow pills, so Vyvanse is nice because it can be dissolved in water or sprinkled on his food (I gave it to him in pudding today and it was very easy for him).
As others have noted, what works wonders for one kid can be a nightmare for the next. You just don't know until you try. Vyvanse was horrendous for our son -- terrible rages as it wore off (so bad we had to call 911 before we quit that one). However, he does brilliantly on Concerta.
You can have bad side effects with any medication, even over-the-counter. Just don't get discouraged because the first try wasn't a match. They're doing the right thing giving a different one a try.
The right ADHD medication can be life-changing for a child.
I don't believe in medicating kids unless there's a life threatening problem. I think if I had all my kids evaluated they would all be found to have ADHD. I have one who was diagnosed with it and two others who show signs of it.
When allergy and GERD meds were causing horrible side effects with my one son who was toddler at the time, I went natural.
Kids with ADHD usually are deficient in the B vitamins, magnesium, and Omega 3s. These have worked very well in my kids.
I'm sure his parents will call the doctor and find something that works if they are not about dietary changes.
My friend's son had a terrible time with Vyvanse. I think Concerta was the type that worked like a miracle for him. It isn't unusual for a person to need to try more than one type of medication for a neuro issue before they find 'the one'.
Everyone is different, so there is no "good" medication that works for all.
Each medication works differently for each person. Adderall has been a wonder drug for my daughter, but others hats it. Unfortunately this is a trial and error process.
We will be heading down this road in the next few months...I'm highly nervous since my 5 (almost 6 year old) is highly sensitive to medications. In my research I came across a prescription medical food (pill) called Vayarin!! This will be our first line of medication for my son. Only draw back most insurances will not cover it :( google it, I find it to be pretty hopeful for us!!
We had to try Ritalin first because the kids have state medical cards. The state won't pay for any of the higher priced meds until it's proven to them that the cheap med that has been around years and years and years with minimal side effects. It cost the state hundreds of dollars less to use this older med. So we did. It's like a miracle drug to our family. It goes out of the system in a few hours with NO residual drug in his system. So it's a good med to us.
All meds can cause problems in different kids. In our group, we all see nutritional supplementation having a much better outcome with zero side effects.
