Hi! My 2 month old was just diagnosed with VU Reflux after having a UTI. Her VU reflux is a grade 3-4. Does anyone know anything about this? Any information would be helpful. Is this an isolated condition or are there any other medical/developmental problems or delays associated with this? What is the prognosis? Please help!

Dear A., that is scary but it is easily controlled. my daughter has this too and was diagnosed at the same age as your son. she is on a daily dose of bactrim, still and hasnt had any more uti's. She goes for an annual vcug and kidney scan which is not fun but, hopefully this year she will have grown out of it. there are groups of moms who you can asks questions re. this issue on baby center and cafe mom. go to those sites and seach vur or urinary reflux. the uriologychannel.com has also been very helpful. best of luck. email me directly if you have any further questions.

My daughter had it...we chose not to medicate b/c she was growing. Around crawling age it got a lot better...the projectile vommit started to reduce in frequency. When she started to walk it was even better. She puked very easily up til about age 3-4. Now at age 5, she rarely pukes. Good luck

My now 2 1/2 year old was diagnosed at 1. I was told that alot of times children will have this and not know it and it will go away. Sometimes it goes away on its own. In some cases you have to have corrective surgery. My daughter had it the one time and she hasnt had it again. I hope you dont have a recurrence.

My son was diagnoised at 5 weeks old with a grade 4 on one side and grade 5 on the right. He has been on antibiotics since his hospitalization then. We have been seeing Dr Smith of DuPage Medical Group, but I am in the process of switching doctors right now. The only thing I know for sure from my experience is that you have to do what you can to prevent any more UTI's. From what I was told, each UTI causes kidney scarring and too much scarring can cause kidney failure. I would also recommend seeing a specialist and keeping up with the antibiotics.

My son showed no reflux on his right side during the last two VCUG's he's had, so I fully believe it is possible to grow out of it. We didn't really see any change until about 18 months though and the doctor keeps saying it's a fluke, but I 100% believe that it's possible. Otherwise, my son is a thriving, normal 2 year old who shows no signs of his illness except for the daily meds he takes.

Good Luck!!!

My daughter was diagnosed with this at 5 months old. She has a grade 3 on one side and a 4 on the other. She is taking Bactrim daily and she is doing great on that. We have not had any UTI's since the initial infection and her last round of tests came back with great improvement. We go back for the annual VCUG in November. We see Dr. Cheng at Children's Memorial. He is a fantastic doctor. This is hereditary and it is VERY common. From what we were told, there are people walking around with reflux that don't even know they have it. For some reason some people develop a UTI and that is cause for alarm as you don't want them ending up with a kidney infection. A lot of time this will repair on it's own. I had this as a baby, and mine repaired itself. Are you seeing a pediatric urologist?

There is a group on Facebook - parents of children with this. It is helpful when you have questions since all the parents on there are in the same boat as you!

No, there are not any developmental problems or delays. You just need to be extra careful when the child gets a fever - to make sure it's not another UTI. As our doctor has said, she can go out and do everything any other child her age can do and we can just hope at this point that it heals itself so we don't have to put her through surgery to correct it.
