LOVE my vitamix! We went through a couple smoothie machines and a couple blenders, then finally gave in and so happy we did!
Okay ladies -- Husband just brought home a Vitamix for $400. Is this thing really all that wonderful, or is it, as I suspect, just a glorified blender?
Don't get me wrong, he can have his glorified blender, he works hard for it. But I'm listening to him trying to grind up some ice or something and it doesn't sound all that wonderful to me.
For the most part you all supported his blender. I will let him know. ;)
Thanks.

omg. I love mine. If I had a fire that would be the first thing I would grab to take with me. I'm a smoothie and soup freak and that machine is awesome. It has a lifetime warranty I believe. You will never want to use another blender again.
Before our $400 Vitamix, we had a standard blender. In the first week alone of owning the Vitamix we used it more than we had with 10 years of the other blender. That was three years ago and we still use it 3x-4x a week. I mostly use it for fruit and veggie smoothies which have helped me eat healthier and lose weight. It's just like anything else, if you use it, it's wonderful, if you don't, it's a waste.
Flip through the recipe book. There's a lot of good stuff in there.
Its a high speed blender. It does things a regular blender could never do. And the warranty is amazing. They will replace anything forever! I've had mine for 10 years, my in-laws have had theirs for 20. Here are a few things I've done with mine that I could not have done with a regular blender:
saved 100's of dollars making my own baby food, sneak kale into my kids fruit shakes, don't even bother to peal or core apples, pears, heck, I don't even haul my strawberries, just toss them in. I am able to sweeten my fruit shakes with dates (seeded) and add chia seeds or flax seeds (something a regular blender could never get smooth). Because of my vita-mix we eat a lot healthier. Its only a waste of money if you don't use it. Everyone I know who owns one finds it well worth the money. But more so, they are able to eat healthier. I use mine at least once if not two or three times daily. Just for dinner I popped in ginger and garlic because I was too lazy to peal the ginger or mince the garlic for my stir fry. They are easy to wash, but I often just rinse mine if I was only using plant based foods. Its not the only good high speed blender on the market, but it will grind things that a regular blender could never touch. Heck you can even mill your own flour in it! People who have never used a high speed blender don't understand. I guarantee that if the ladies below put dates, chia seeds, and kale into their fruit smoothies, their $80 blenders could not get it smooth.
I was just visiting some friends who told me what I believe is the best use ever for a Vitamix. Prepare yourself...they pour a full bottle of red wine in it!! It aerates the wine like nobody's business!!
We don't have one, but I am now tempted. So much faster than letting it breathe...heehee...
OK Rose, I'm here to tell you that the Vitamix *is* all that and a bag of chips! :P
We LOVE ours!
Yes $400 is pricey but I've never had a blender this good. I was skeptical at first too.
I'm a big smoothie person and got a Ninja blender from target for $60. I use it several times a week and love that it crushes ice in seconds and is super easy to clean.
I had a choice between the vitamix and the blendtec and the blendtec won hands down.
I can tell you the blendtec was well worth the three hundred we spent on it.
i bought cuisinart 5 speed juicer for 20 dollars through kindle offers. that's as much as i am willing to pay for these things. i have a immersion blender that i love. i will love the cuisinart too, but only for the price. if i had paid 400 i would probably sleep with it :)
worth every penny.
i've had every kind of blender there is, and finally saved for and plopped down the cash for a blendtec. i use it many times every day. when it dies, i'm buying a vitamix because for the same price it's even better. (i may have a bit of a lemon- my friend's blendtec is every bit as good as my mumsie's vitamix, but mine doesn't puree tough greens to same degree of silky smoothness as theirs.)
the ninja and kitchen aides don't compare. i ADORE my kitchen aide and use it often, but not for the same stuff as the blendtec.
yes, it's annoyingly loud. but if your husband wants really good smoothies, in addition to all the other wonders the vitamix/blendtec can perform, he spent the money well.

It's a glorified blender. Works well, yes, but is almost useless for people who don't want to drink their food on a regular basis. For most people, it would be overkill to spend that much. If your husband is really into smoothies and other blended drinks, then it should serve him very well.
We got one when our son was going through eating disorder treatment and we needed to smuggle in good things into his chocolate shakes. The nutritionist recommended it.
Well, it's proving to be just another Dyson to me: overhyped. It's a glorified blender. It blends well, but so did our regular blender. I can't say it's done anything to make me say "wow!" However, who really says "wow!" to a blender anyway? It's a blender. It blends.
I don't hate it, but also don't think we should have spent $400 on one.
I know someone who bought one.
But then, well, it became a dust collector on her kitchen counter. ie: it was a passing fancy. Impulse buy.
So in that sense, it was not worth the $400.
But if your Husband, makes good use of it and actually makes tons of things with it, consistently, and likes blender "cooking"....then I guess it is worth it for him!
We just recently got a kitchen aid mixer on sale for $80, so far there is nothing we have tried it for that it has not worked wonderfully on. There is no way I would pay that much for a blender, heck, I really thought $80 seemed high.
We love, love, love our Vitamix. It is going to last you a lifetime. No more blown blender when making daquiries. Read what all you can do with it! You can make amazing soup in 5 minutes - piping hot delectable soup with leftovers.
Honestly, those blades will service your needs forever. Make sure that your husband is actually following the directions instead of just doing the "man thing", LOL! He'll have a much better outcome - professional style drinks, etc.
all these posts are making me want to purchase one. my in laws have one and swear that it's the best thing ever.
