Vitamin That Doesn't Make You Sick?

I've been taking the same prenatal vitamin- OTC Target- for ages (because of nursing), but now that I'm pg with our second, it's making me feel terrible. I have morning sickness anyway, but these left me moaning on the floor. Did anyone have the same issue, and what vitamin did you take that didn't make you sick? I'd love to try something that others have had success with, rather than just keep trying different ones. Thanks!

So What Happened?

I've been taking all of your advice- and taking the pills (thanks for the recommendations!) right before bed. I've definitely noticed a big difference, and now things are tolerable. It was getting really difficult to chase after my toddler when I felt so awful! Thanks!!!

If you were ok with them before I would stick with them . If you eat a little something you can handle and then take it before bed it is usually the best. I ate a yoghurt or apple or both then took mine about a half hour later.I found that if I drank with food I felt worse. Everyone is different so keep trying. It's a great sign that you have morning sickness. Hope it gets easier :)

I took Citra Natal (RX only). I was very sick all day with my daughter but the vitamins never made me ill. I took them at night right before I closed my eyes. It really helped. Try taking them at night.

Have you heard about Melaleuca's prenatal vitamins. They are natural and they are so good. If you need more information on how to get them contact my friend through her website and she can give you more details on that: http://www.EnjoyingMyTime.com

J.,

I was in a similar boat (now pg 13 weeks). I was taking a Rx prenatal for about a year with no problems, then week 7, and BAM! gross and green feeling. My OBGYN suggested OTC Nature's Made (from Target) and suddenly I was fine again.

Everyone is different tho so try not to get discouraged. Ask for some samples from your Dr - they should be able to give you a week's worth of each one. My dr said it's a combo of your hormones and your body as to which one will "work" for you.

Best wishes!

Sara

Hi,

Congrats! If you choose to keep taking a vitamin, take it at night so you sleep through the nausea.

HI J..
I tried some from whole foods and they made me sick. I bought the generic target brand (i think it was 6.99) and have had no problems since. Good luck and feel better.

Hi J.-stop taking vitamins-they are synthetic and full of heavy metals and pesticides plus your body does not metabolize them and get on an organic whole food supplement.

I found that I handled my prenatal vitamins better if I took them before bed. I think the vitamin I took was Primacare One (prescription only).

Right before bed I eat something small and take all my pills when I'm about 1/2 way done. I don't feel ill this way but if I take them and stay up I do start to feel ill. The best thing I found was to take them and go to sleep.

I used Rainbow Light one a day prenatal vitamins. You can get them at Whole Foods. Only problem I had was they were so big that I had to split them.

Regarding the morning sickness, try chewing gum. It helped me a lot!

I usually recommend my patients take their prenatals at night just before bed. This usually cuts down on nausea or at least makes them unaware of it. I used a vitamin that I bought a natural food stores that contained protein and probiotics. It was quite pricy but I felt a little better about it because it didn't have all the synthetic nutrients- everything came from vegetable sources. Hope you feel better soon.

Lots of the vitamins I tried made me sick too. I've had good luck with Prenatabs. It's prescription, but it's generic so it's pretty cheap. I got 3-months for $12 at CVS. Good luck.

If I am remembering correctly, a friend of mine had to chew two Flintstone vitamins per recommendation of her OB since she was so sick from the prenatal ones. Check it out with your doctor.

Hope it gets better soon,

I don't remember what prenatal vitamin I took. It's been 9 years. I remember that someone suggested to me taking the vitamin just before I went to bed. It helped a lot. Good luck.

I had the same issue - had success with Prenate Elite, which your OB can prescribe.

With both of my pregnancies, prenatals made me sick. I would take them before bed with a glass of chocolate milk. That helped sometimes. I wasn't able to consistently take vitamins until around my 3rd or 4th month of pregnancy, and my doctor said that was fine. Good luck!

I have a very hard time taking prenatal vitamins. In prior pregnancies my OB told me it was ok to eat a bowl of total in the morning (it gives you 100% of most of your vitamins/minerals). With this pregnancy I was told drinking Orange Juice also helps because it contains folic acid wich is one of the most important vitamins in pregnancy. This prenancy I started using my kids gummy vitamins as well. They taste like gummy bears and I didn't have a hard time getting and keeping them down.

Most vitamins in general do not meet the US Pharmacopia guidelines...a good way to test your vitamins is to stick your vitamin in 1c of distilled white vinegar for 30-min (vinegar has the same stomach acidity); if it completely dissolves, then it is is being absorbed in your body, if not, then it is a waste. Food grade vitamins are better choices, Rainbow Light Prenatal One a Day or New Chapter Organics Perfect Prental is even better. You can buy them online cheaper than Whole Foods at www.vitaminshoppe.com or www.vitacost.com they have probiotics in them, made with real food and high quality. www.consumerlab.com just came out with their list of recommended vitamins and these two are on that list. Target...wasn't even on the list.

I hope that helps and try eating a banana first thing in the morning, natural remedy for morning sickness and heartburn (for later).

J.,
I agree with Toni. There are so many store brand vitamins that just don't cut it.

When I was pregnant with my first son, I had already been taking a Shaklee muti-vitamin (food supplement, no fillers or synthetic ingredients). When my midwife asked me if I needed a prescription for prenatal vitamins, I mentioned that I was already taking a multi-vitamin and when I told her what kind, she told me that I was already taking the best vitamin out there.

I have a wonderful comparison to other prenatals if you are interested in seeing it. Send me a message with your email address and I can share it with you.

Hi J.,

You know it can be hard to find a vitamin that doesn't make you nausious when you're pregnant but I have something you can try. The most important thing is that your baby is getting all the nutrients it needs to grow healthy. I set up customer accounts for a store called Melaleuca, the Wellness company. They have amazing vitamins that have been independently proven to have the highest absorption and antioxidant protection. I just take their regular vitamins, not the prenatals, but I have 2 girlfriends that are taking them and they haven't complained of feeling sick. It you're interested in trying them out, I would love to help you. I can also tell you how you can shop healthier and safer for your family and save some money.
Give me a call, Sincerely T. S: ###-###-####

Talk to your doctor before you do this, but try taking 2 Flintstones vitamins and a folic acid supplement. That should give you everything you need, but is less likely to make you feel sick.
