I've been told by my doctor to start taking fish oil tablets. I have not found any with pills that are not huge enough to gag a horse. I have never been able to swallow large pills and I was wondering if any of you know of any fish oil supplements that are not GIGANTIC? I do cook fish every now and then, mostly catfish and tilapia. Im not a fan of salmon. We eat a fair share of tuna sandwiches.... it's just hard to know if you are getting enough fish oil from those particular fish. Does anyone know? Our diet is pretty balanced. With all of the fish oil hype I'm just wondering if I really should be taking it? I have herniated disks in my back right now and the doc said fish oil, D3 and magnesium would all help with inflammation and the healing of the disks. Do smoked oysters have the necessary fish oil in them, I love those on crackers.
Thanks for the great advice. I think I will try the childrens fish oil.... I am a kid at heart afterall! :) Ive had others tell me about the Krill oil as well. Howcome that one is never advertised I wonder? Hmmm

Ask a pharmacist if what you're consuming is adequate vs. fish oil tablets.
There's only 1 medication of highly concentrated fish oil that's FDA approved (www.lovaza.com). Most health care professionals agree that it's much better than OTC products that are not FDA regulated and vary in quality and preparation (thus causing more fish burps, etc).
Good luck healing those disks.
I'd ask about the prescription as all I've heard (was in pharmaceutical sales for 9 years) is that it's by far the best product on the market.
Hi I'm really late in answering this, but I really like my fish oil supplement: Carlson Norwegian Cod Liver Oil. It's a liquid actually and it tastes like lemon because of how they process it. No additives (beyond lemons), preservatives, mercury, it's from Norway and so are the fish so it's kind of expensive ($29 a bottle), but it lasts quite awhile and even my 2 y/o takes it without problems. One note about fish oil pills - I can't stand them. Unless I take them before bed, I find myself burping them up and it tastes and smells so awful. The fish oil liquid has never caused problems and I've been taking it for several years now.
The GNC store, there is one at Stoneridge Mall, and likely other locations, plus you can order online. The GNC brand Omega 3 orange chews taste like Starburst candy. No fishy aftertaste either. My daughter likes them.
You can avoid the pills and try the oil. My son takes the Nordic Naturals Children's fish oil and its strawberry flavored. I add it to his drink and he drinks it right down....and he is a very picky eater normally.
Nordic Naturals DHA supplement is not only small, but high quality (no contaminants). I've been taking fish oil for years and have noticed many health benefits, both mental and physical. I know I am considerably healthier because I take it regularly - it is my most regarded supplement and I try not to go without it. Fish use to be a main staple in humans' diet until recently (because of mercury contamination and the poor American Diet). Our bodies function best (and last longer) when we have DHA in our system. You can order it online at Amazon.com or find it in many health/natural food stores.
try the children's fish oils. they are "chewable" and taste quite pleasant. you might have to double the dose since you're an adult.
good luck!
This is what I do for a living. I have omega 3 fish oil that I take that are smaller. You need to take 3 to get 1000 mg in, but they are much easier to swallow and I don't get a fishy burpy taste later. They are very pure.
Here is the thing with eating a lot of fish. Contaminants. Sometimes you are better off with a fish oil with a company that has carefully removed toxins, and then just eating fish once a week. Preferably fresh, not farmed.
I'd be glad to send you a video about fish oil and why it's a good choice, as well as links to look at the fish oil and calcium with D3 if you like.
i take krill oil because like you said, the fish oil pills are humongous! Also, I hated the fishy burps/aftertaste! You don't get them with krill oil, which is actually pleasant in taste. Costco sells the Schiff MegaRed brand if you want to give them a try!
Hi Grandma---I'd like to throw one additional bit of info in the hat for you. First, here is a website with some great info, http://www.answers.com/topic/omega-3-fatty-acid. Next, the fish consumed must be oily, cold water fish. The article lists several. Flax seeds are an excellent source of omega 3 fats, but they must be sythesized in the body to the form used by the body. That is what the krill do...they consume algae and the plant omega 3's are turned into fish oil. Salmon are at the top of the omega 3 food chain that's why they are a good source. Salmon must be wild caught. Farm raised don't eat the diet that gives the salmon the omega 3's.
Flax also has several other good health benefits: lots of fiber and protein, B vitamins and cancer fighting properties. Walnuts also contain omega 3's. Here is another great article: http://www.mckinley.illinois.edu/Handouts/omega-3_fatty_a....
You can avoid the fishy burp if you freeze the fish oil pills first. They then get further into the digestive system before they dissolve. I highly recommend ground flax seeds as a regular part of anyone's diet. I will then, 2 or 3 times per week, take a fish oil capsule as well. Tilapia is not a good source of 3's...don't know about oysters (I love them on crackers also). Google sources of omega 3's to find other sources.
Good luck! D.
My doctor told me that fish oil has to be taken in large quantities to get any benefit (thus the large pills, but he actually said you need to take 6 of those large pills a day, not just the two recommended on the bottle) --- however the good news is that krill oil (krill are the tiny sea creatures that form the basis of the food chain in the ocean) provides the same benefits as fish oil but in much more concentrated doses. If you go to the health food store you will notice that krill oil is more expensive, but you take less and the pills are small. Also, if you just want to add more fish in your diet instead of taking the pills you need the oily fishes -- sardines are really one of the best options out there. Sardines on crackers for lunch?!
You can avoid the pills by just eating fish!
I believe if your goal is Omegas your tuna needs to be albacore, not just the regular kind.
I recently saw a prescription grade fish oil pill advertised by a drug company. The capsules looked very managable. Maybe ask your DR about that prescription. I bet he/she has a ton of free samples since it is a new drug and if not, could get hands on some for you to try before you buy.
Hello TM, I have 2 suggestions about the pill you can open the capsule and take it that way or you can smash it and eat it with applesauce. That is what I did working in the nursing home.
I can tell you as a professional cook, Salmon is the best fish to eat for oils that are healthy. Depending on how you cook them depends greatly on how healthy they are for you.
Fish oil is grat for the skin, the system, and for the brain. Costco has the best price . I have never heard anything about it helping with disk problems. I know that I have had several surgeries for disks and it was never brought up.
Hope that this helps.
There is liquid fish oil that is just as effective as the tablets. Some people do need more of a specific vitaimins but that is on top of an already balanced multi-vitamin. Your information is right on with the inflammation. I would be more than happy to help you figure out how to choose the right vitamin for you. There are so many out there and with advertising it's hard to tell who is telling the truth and what is just hype. It is so imprtant to eat a good diet and it sounds like you are. What most people don't know is that we can't get all of the nutrition we need out of our food; we need to supplement. I hope this new info helps and let me know how else I can assist you!
Hi Mama-
I do know what you mean about those gigantic pills. Geez. Anyway, I went to Wal Mart and Trader Joe's and basically stood in the vitamin aisles until I had seen the size and ingredients on EVERY oil. Some are odor free, which I greatly reccommend. Also, if you have a lassens in your town, or a natural or whole foods store, go to the supplements section. Usually there is a worker there who can assist you find a smaller pill. I am so cheap, though, that I went back to Trader Joe's and Wal Mart and only purchase things like Kyolic Garlic at Lassens- or things you just can't get anywhere else. If you take one or two (depending on the bottles reccommendation, I usually start with half the dose) per day, you are getting your reccommended allowance, which is FAR MORE than most people get. If you need magnesium, just look for a women's multi vitamin that has magnesium. I find that it helps to just add the entire supplement to my body. Trader Joe's "Hair, Skin, and Nails" formula for women has magnesium, and I noticed a difference in my body, my attitude, etc. Really, don't over do the amount of supplements you are taking. Alot of people go way overboard. Your body can't process LOADS of supplements- just small amounts added regular, so just add small bits to your daily routine to boost what you are already doing with diet and exercise. It's like drinking water to keep yourself hydrated. If you drink too much, you make yourself sick. You drink enough to refresh and replenish, but not enough to make you spend the entire day in the bathroom. Moderation is the key to everything you put in your body.
Good luck mama- I hope this helps

Your dr suggested the fish oil probably for the omegas. I'm vegan and anti any consumption of animal products BUT if you're into eating fish I strongly suggest sticking with the tilapia rather than salmon, and the rest. There are so many toxins, chemicals, poisons in the oceans that are consumed by the fish and in turn you're eating that it's dangerous. Tuna is riddled with mercury and the others are often farmed and who knows what's going in that.
A safe, clean and healthy source of omega 3,6 and 9 is from hemp seeds and hemp oil (you can sprinkle it on a salad, in a smoothie or over some rice with olive oil, even my daughter loves that. Or you can put some chia seeds in a coffee grinder and do the same with them. Both are rich in all the omegas and you won't have to worry about poisoning yourself or choking.
