Does it matter what type of fish is in your fish oil supplement? I've seen a lot of different kinds. Is wild Alaskan salmon the best?

The fish oil brand does matter. The amount of DHA & EPA and for some even GLA, does matter. It matters what the purpose is for. The purity and making sure it does not get oxidized matters. Some prefer Krill oil with the astaxanthin, some the salmon oil with antioxidants added. Here is some useful information:

Dr Oz is endorsing the krill oil now, it's much easier on the digestive tract and is supposed to be even better than the fish oil. We take the fish oil because the fish dine on the krill. He says it's better to go straight to the source and take the krill. They are much smaller tablets as well and easier to swallow without burping up FISH ;)
As A. L. said, I would go with Krill Oil. I was a HUGE fan of Nordic Naturals when they used cod liver oil and vegetable gelatin for their capsules.
Now they make their capsules from the marrow of pigs and cows and that makes me doubt their dedication to quality.
High quality krill oil is great and you can also get Omega 3's from chia seeds. Both are great options!
I'd say the big thing is just finding fish oil supplements you can stomach. Just opening the jars and smelling some brands is nauseating, long before even attempting to swallow the stinky pill.
We give our son chewy Omega 3 supplements we found at Costco. No remote fish smell or aftertaste. First one we found that even I could bear to deal with.

Really if you can try to get small containers. I can't take a lot of fish oils, long story, very unpleasant. Instead I do flax seed oil. I keep trying fish oils since my husband uses them hoping one I can tolerate.
At the moment the crazy expensive prescription one is the only one that doesn't make me sick.....not spending the money on that.
I prefer krill oil, which I can take in much smaller doses for the same effect, and so I don't get any fishy burps afterward. That was a huge problem for me with any brand of fish oil.
My daughter researched all the available brands for strength and purity, and decided to get the Carlson brand fish oil. It has added lemon flavoring, which really helps the palatability. Even her 5yo son likes what he calls his "lemon oil."
