(VERY) Loosly Related to the Population Quesion...

Have any of you seen the movie Idiocracy? It has Luke Wilson in it and the brunette woman who is in the new show "Up All Night." Anyway, someone's response to the population question mentioned that some of her really smart friends had missed their opportunity for children, and it made me think of this movie. Before anyone who has seen this (or reads a summary) gets offended, PLEASE don't think that I believe that everyone who has lots of kids is dumb. I just think it's an interesting movie that has SOME true basis, although it's clearly exaggerated.

Anyway, so the question, again, is have you seen it? If you have, what did you think of it?

My own answer to that would be that I thought it was funny (satire, not ha-ha) and I could definitely think of at least a couple of examples on both ends of the spectrum (high and low IQ) that fit the stereotypes they worked from. So for me, it was almost a "whoa... wouldn't THAT be scary?!?"

What can I do next?

I haven't seen the movie but can relate a bit. I was friends with a couple who, 10 years ago, had no intention of having children, ever. One was a math teacher and the other was a physicist. I remember saying that it was a shame that they weren't going to have children because they are exactly the kind of people who *should* be procreating and sharing their brainiac genes with the world. They did eventually decide to have kids and are great parents. I definitely know plenty of people where if their genetic line stopped with them, the world would not suffer a loss. Alas, those are the ones who keep having kids...

Well, as the mother of 8 children I hope JB isn't including all of us in that remark. I've known many kids who were very brilliant and had parents that were not, just like maybe parents look great and kids don't or vice versa. I really think having children is a personal decision and everyone shouldn't just have one child unless it's their choice and I would never suggest everyone should have 8. How can we stereotype this?

I have not seen this movie, but now i may have to rent it. The responses are interesting.

I have often asked myself this very same question- why do the often brilliant, genius level members of our society chose to not have children? I do consider myself higher than average I.Q. and I have 3 children, but I know plenty of people smarter than me who chose to not procreate. Interesting look into our society.

I thought that movie was very funny. I do not think that people who judge me for how many kids I have are very funny or very smart.

I thought the movie was stupid, sorry! I recall groaning when my sons turned into neandrathals while watching it.

I can't really relate it to life as I know it, and I'm thankful for that!

My husband loves that movie so I am treated to watching it at least every other week. If you look at what today's pharmacetical (sp.) advertising you would think all we cared about was looking good and keeping the flag flying. There is a ring of truth to the whole idea. I think as we go along science will catch up to the living longer science and they will figure out a way to keep a woman's eggs fresh for longer periods of time.
Maya Rudolph is the lady's name. She used to be on SNL and is in the Bridesmaids movie (hilarious.) cb

I actually was discussing this movie with a friend of mine when I told her I was going to have a third (I'm the one that mentioned the smart friends).

It's a very funny satire movie. My hubby thinks the machines are going to eat us in the next 20 years, so a future like Idiocracy won't happen. While the movie is exaggerated and satirical, I know lots of people like the upper class couple in that movie, "now isn't the right time to have a baby, we just don't have the money, oh we can't afford another, even though we make 200k a year, kids are just so expensive." I seriously have 2 close friends that make close to 200k that aren't having any more kids because they are too expensive! I'm serious! We make a whole lot less money, but we are having 3. They look at me like I'm cutting off my kids legs (how will you afford college for them? down payments on houses, etc.)

I hate movies like Idiocracy, but I thought it was an interesting commentary on one possible future.

I think the movie is hilarious =) and yes, it made me think, too!! I definitely see the truth in it.
BUT all that said, I believe the average IQ is still on the rise, so I think we're safe for now =) As long as we continue to place an emphasis on giving our kids the best education possible, we can avoid a potential future disaster like this one =)
