My husband and I are trying to plan a vacation. We have two "types" of vacations in mind, and haven't decided which one we're going to go for yet. That said, I'm looking for suggestions on WHERE to go.
The first "type" of vacation would be us (hubby & me) only, and would basically be our honeymoon. (We didn't have an opportunity to take one when we got married because of work/school.)
The second "type" would be a family vacation with us and the two girls, who will be about 3 1/2 & 1 yr when we take this vacation.
So, any suggestions on where to go for either type of vacation? We're pretty open to any distance, although we're not big on crowded places. Disneyland is a place that comes to mind when I think of my worst nightmare. Too many people in one spot!! :)
***EDIT*** The main reason we're considering a family vacation as opposed to a honeymoon is because he will have been gone for a year when this happens, and I'm concerned about daddy finally coming home, only to have mommy and daddy BOTH leave.
I vote honeymoor! We just got back from the Dominican and it was great. We went to Punta Cana. We have also been to Porta Plata. Love it!!!
My wife and I love to go cruising. The cruise lines are hurting for business now and have never been cheaper.
The best cruise lines are very family oriented and have really good kids programs. Now the cruise ships have kids programs so the parents can have free time. Why? They want the parents to come back again. They want the kids to have so much fun they will come back over and over again as adults. I've taken my kids and grand kids and they had a wonderful time. The kids programs are staffed by people trained in child development and such and are excellent at making sure the kids have a wonderful time.
On a cruise you have the chance to eat at 5* restaurants every meal or go buffet if you want. The have free entertainment every night and lots of things to do every day. The ships are so stable they have minature golf courses and bowling alleys on some ships.

I vote for honeymoon. Take time for you and your husband. Your girls will be too young to really do much on a vacation and they wouldn't remember it anyways. Take time to nurture your marriage and to enjoy each other without any distractions. Beach sounds fun- or maybe find a bed and breakfast place. That would be so romantic! Have fun!
I vote for honeymoon! A vacation with kids that age probably won't feel like much of a vacation.
I like Mexico because it is cheaper than other tropical destinations but you are really "away." We have stayed in the Riviera Maya area twice and it was great. You can get a little ways from Cancun (which is busier) to resort hotels, and you can do daytrips to Mayan ruins and things like that. There's snorkeling if you like that kind of thing (I don't!!).
One of the best vacations we took was to the Smokey Mtns. in TN. We rented a cabin that had a huge yard, took our dogs too. One neighbor had cows the other had horses. We had a pool for lazy days and when we got out, the scenery was gorgeous, played in the river, floated down streams. Very simple but wonderful. Have fun!
I would go with the honeymoon. The time alone will help strengthen your marriage. If you don't get away from the kids a ton you i'm sure need a nice relaxing break. I would go for the beach all the way!
If you can hold off one more year, a Cruise (on Carnival) would be the best of both worlds. Kids can go AND you can have alone time. Kids can go to a FREE Kids Camp while you go to dinner, shows, casino or even get off the boat. Carnival requires kids to be 2 and RC requires them to be 3 or the Kids Camp, so you have to watch. There's sooo much to do on and off the boat or you can sit and relax. There are splash pads and waterslides for the kids and serenity pools for adults. All meals are included an if you get your kid a hot dog and they take one bite and change their mind, you walk up and get them something else. You can see multiple islands, take shore excursions or just walk around. There is a formal night to get all dressed up and have a nice family photo taken. You can go to nice dinners or buffets style. 24 hour free room service and pizza around the clock. We just got back Saturday from our 3rd Cruise with our kids and we all love it. Family time, kid time and adult time. And a cruise is the best bang for your buck. We spent an extra 3 days in Florida at hotels….paying for every meal, snack and drink plus the room….I am certain the 3 days cost us another grand :(
A vacation I would love to go on would be to Yellow stone park. I also hate crowds. I hear Kema is a fun place to go (never been only heard and saw pictures). If your into camping we really enjoy http://www.leisurecamp.net/ there are lots of places in Texas to go camping or even further away. But those are the things I am into. It truly depends on what you all are into. I remember school mates taking vacations to Washington and seeing all the monuments. While other kids went to Mexico. Houston has some great museums and exibits. Like the butterfly museum or the Imax theater and hit the zoo. Its some what annoying with the crowds but not too horrible.
I think honeymoon or the cruise idea is great! My husband and I went to Puerto Rico (and did not stay at San Juan) and stayed at a beach resort near the jungle. We stayed on the resort but also took time to hike and visit San Juan. Also, you don't need a passport to go to Puerto Rico which now costs more than $100 each if you don't already have one. We also went on a trip to SanFran area (it is pretty cold in summer) and drove down coastal route 1 with bunch of different stops. It was beautiful and would recommend that too!
