Looking for Fun Anniversary Destination

My husband and I are celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary in October and my parents have offered to watch our kids while we go away for a week. Unfortunately, due to various scheduling conflicts, we just realized we'll need to take our vacation in June, rather than late summer (as originally planned) or October. We were hoping to go to an all-inclusive in Mexico or Jamaica, but we currently have passport cards, rather than passports (passport cards allow you to drive or arrive by ship into Canada, Mexico, etc., but you can't use them when you're flying to those countries), and I'm afraid we wouldn't get real passports back in time to use them in June. A cruise is out; DH is afraid of seasickness. So we're trying to agree on someplace in the U.S. (or Canada, if it's near enough to a major U.S. city that we could fly up and drive over the border) that would be relaxing, pretty, and new to us. Most of our vacations are either Disney or require a lot of driving, and DH is hoping to do something more laid-back this time. He's pushing for Chicago, which he's been to and loves, and I'd like to go to Oregon, but he's afraid going to Oregon would require a lot of driving to get to the places we would want to see, and Chicago is not what I think of when I think of romantic vacations. I would love some feedback from you guys about nice places to spend a week, kid-free. Some culture and site-seeing would be great, but I think DH is mainly concerned with being pampered, sleeping late, and having a nice view. :-) Oh, and to rule a few places out: we're already going to CA this summer with the kids, we've been to Seattle, British Columbia, Boston, Montreal, Colorado (many times), and Florida (many times), and I have extreme arachnophobia, so it can't be someplace too rustic. And if anyone from the Chicago area or Oregon would like to chime in to tell me why either of those places would fit our needs, I would love your feedback!

Thanks for any suggestions!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! After a couple of you assured me that cruises don't usually cause seasickness, DH and I started investigating our options for cruises in June. We narrowed it down to Carnival out of Galveston or Disney in Alaska. Seeing Alaska has always been a dream of mine, and we trust the Disney name, so we're all booked and leave in 2 1/2 weeks. I really appreciate all of the feedback. I've got a nice little list of places within the U.S. for the next time we need to get out of town. :-)

Hi Nichole,
This may seem too simple or boring but last year we left our kids with my Mom and simply went to the Omni down town Fort Worth. They have super comfy beds, it is quiet, the spa is incredible, rooftop pool / hot tub / bar are great and they have a Bobs Chop house on the main level. It was also fun for us to ride the trolley (picks you up out front) to the movies and then walked around and had snacks and cocktails and enjoyed the nightlife. The trolley ran to 11:00.

So when we enjoyed our really romantic, relaxing and fun weekend doing things that we usually don’t do (movies and pub hopping) we simply drove the 20 minutes back to Keller

Just a thought, have fun whatever you do!

You can always visit the wine country (Napa and Sonoma) here in California, and take in the sights in San Francisco at the same time. That is a fun time without the kids. I know you're bringing your kids to California this summer, but I imagine you are probably going to Disneyland - so you won't get bored of seeing the same things twice!

My other thought is, why not Hawaii? We went to Kauai for our honeymoon, and have gone back every year since (with the kids though). It's very romantic there if you go as a couple. And since there are so many chickens on island, there aren't many bugs! :)

Have fun on your trip!

My name is N. Cox and I am a Travel Agent from Flower Mound Texas. I will be happy to help you. You can get a passport by June if you want to go that route. There is a place in Southlake or Dallas where you can get them in 1day to 2 weeks. So an all inclusive to the Caribbean or Mexico is possible. If you wanted to drive over the border into Canada I would suggest Quebec. It would fulfill all your needs, romantic, relaxing, lots to do and Europe feel for not the price.
Chicago does not come to mind for romance but I hear the Oregon coast is beautiful much like Seattle. You could always go to St Thomas or San Juan no passport needed. Please feel free to call me ###-###-#### or email me. There is no charge for my services.
Thanks,
N. Cox

Take a cruise to the Bahamas. We were going to that this year because my husband is the only one w/ a passport and we didnt want to spend the $$ for another 4 of them. Our travel agent said as long as you are on an American boat and porting in the bahamas you dont need a passport.

We just did our first cruise and had no sea sickness! It was the best, most awesome child-free vacation ever! The only thing we would have done different is be gone longer - but I did miss my babies! I really, really recommend it. Lots of pampering, lots of great views. So many activities to take part in and try - or you can sleep late, plus entertainment easily accessible.

I would suggest flying into Buffalo NY and visiting both Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-lake. Niagara falls is beautiful and one of the natural wonders of the world. Lots to see and do there. Pretty romantic strolls and you can have dinner in a revolving restaurant overlooking the falls. Very pretty. There is also a huge casino there if you both like that. If you do bring the kids there is a great wolf lodge there too and lots of fun activities. Niagara on the lake is a beautiful and quaint little town where you can walk along and browse in the shops or have an ice cream. There are lots of wineries there too and you could go on a winery tour or visit the butterfly conservatatory. Nice and relaxing. Buffalo airport is only about 30 min to these locations. Good luck and happy 15th!

I personally LOVE the Oregon Coast! It's absolutely beautiful, tons to see and do, and affordable higher class hotels with great views. Restaurants right on the ocean and so much more.

You can go to the visitoregoncoast.com website for everything!

I love to go to Seaside for the small shops and I love Cannon Beach for romantic walks on the beach.

I vote beach because how can visiting a beach NOT be relaxing? :)

Happy early anniversary!

I know you said you were going to CA already, but I'm assuming you're not taking the kids to wine country, so I was going to suggest Sonoma too. Sonoma, not Napa. Totally different feel I think. I thought Sonoma was more romantic and less touristy. We loved it and we also went in June-- weather was warm, but not too warm. Very relaxing, very adult! We stayed at a B&B that has since gone out of business, but there are a ton of good ones out there. Highly recommend the Benziger winery tour.

I was also thinking, why not Puerto Rico? It's in the U.S. so no passport required. It's not rustic anymore. :-) I have never been there, but I have several friends who vacation there and they love it. They have all-inclusive resorts there too.

The other place I was going to suggest was South Carolina-- the beaches there are amazing. We went to Kiawah Island last year in late May and it was incredibly beautiful. The only bad thing is there are lots of bugs-- mostly palmetto bugs though (a polite term for cockroaches). But you really cannot beat the beaches, the golf, the scenery. It is AMAZING! And it is NOT crowded like Florida. They have a resort on Kiawah that is incredible. Expensive, but incredible. We stayed in a rented house on Kiawah, but we did visit the resort. We rented bikes and rode around the island... there are bike trails everywhere. We really had a wonderful time.

Good luck and have fun!

I've been to Chicago a few times, and I wouldn't put it in the category of relaxing or romantic... :-)

I get extreme sea-sickness on small boats.....and also get car sick so I am very sensitive that way.....but guess what we have been on 3 cruises and the only time I got sea sick was when they had to stop the ship for an hour or so to air lift a sick passenger.....so please tell your husband that a cruise is the way to go...you can drive down to Galveston and there are so many options...........he will get the view with the relaxation being on that ship!! have fun and Happy Anniversary!
