Urinary Tract Infection in Preschooler?

My son is 3 1/2 and has been diagnosed with a viral uti? It started 5 days ago.....he was peeing more than usual. His preschool teacher told me he peed 4 times in the 3.25 hours he was there. Usually he goes once, maybe twice. I took him to the dr. They tested his urine and he was negative for diabetes and bacterial uti. So he has had a cold, so pediatrician said most likely viral uti. So we were advised to give cranberry juice 4 times a day. We've been doing that and adding a little oj to it, so he'll drink it and it isn't much better. He will go 2 hours and be fine, then go 3 times in just over an hour. How long does it take to clear and now I'm wondering if it could be psychological? He hasn't had any changes in his life. Thanks for any advice.

What can I do next?

You can also use the Cran Grape and Cran Apple juices. They're sweeter and he'll most likely drink them easier for you. As for length of time--it depends on the severety of it. I've had symptoms last up to 2 weeks after initial treatment. If you're giving him orange juice--please note that o.j. hits me harder than coffee. I have to run something awful several times in an hr after I've had o.j. to drink. This could be his problem as well.

make sure it's 100% fruit juice and not from concentrate. Concentrate just adds more sugar. I would go to a health food store and find one there.

Make sure it is 100% juice and not just a fruit drink also. Maybe if he doesn't like the flavor, you could get a little glass, and have him drink just a little bit every 30 minutes or so and in between that only water.
I know when I've had one, it has taken a couple weeks for symptoms to completely go away. I drank water around the clock also when I wasn't drinking the juice. Personally, I like cranberry juice. :)

Poor guy! I hope it clears up soon.

Something else to consider. Our son was going about every 20-30 minutes. I think he was 4 or 5. All the tests were negative and a sono showed no issues. The urologist said that kids who take baths can sometimes get soap in the urethra and it causes an irritation that gives them the sensation that they need to urinate often. He suggested showers until it clears up and then no bubble baths and no sitting in the soapy water after bathing. It cleared up when we started giving him showers. After that if he took a bath we would let him play first and then would get him out as soon as we bathed him.

One thing that has really worked for me is parsley tea - try it and see if your son will drink it. I liked it, but I love parsley - my dad doesn't and wouldn't drink it. Just get a big bunch of parsley, wash it off, chop it up, put it in a big pot, cover it with water, boil it up. Either drink it warm or cold. I liked it so much that I even ate the parsley!
Good luck!

Do not assume this is psychological -- I would take him to a urologist if this continues They can do ultrasound scans to see if he is retaining fluids after voiding (which would indicate and reveal if there is some blockage). Can be as simple as irritation/swelling blocking the urethral opening and making him unable to empty fully with each pee. But I'd go to a pediatric urologist where they can do other (non-invasive) tests to get to the answer if it doesn't clear up in the next few days.

Could it be that he just has a small bladder? If anyone in your family has a small bladder, then your son is prone to having one too. My six year old can go a long time without going to the bathroom, but the second he has something to drink he has to go like crazy! Especially if he drinks juice or on occasions soda... it runs right through him! If he has something to drink while we are out shopping, he is hitting up the bathroom at every location, sometimes twice before we leave. Just something else to consider :) Good luck and hope that if it is a uti that it goes away quickly!
