Upcoming Time Change and Baby's Sleeping?

With the time change quickly approaching, I started wondering what this will do to my baby's sleep schedule. Currently, he goes down at 6:30pm, wakes up at 11:30pm to eat, and sleeps until 6:00am (with an occasional waking for his pacifier). With those sleep/awake times pretty firmly in place for some time now, should I anticipate something quite different once we "fall back"?

How have your babies managed these time changes?

What can I do next?

First don't adjust the wrong way we fall back and spring forward, so we are falling back now. I start adjusting about 15 min for a couple of days then go 15 more min until they are adjusted to the new schedule. also don't forget to adjust feedings and naps. Good Luck!

Hello I ama mother of 4 and to be honest. I feel to keep the same time. Some kids don't budge with time change. Some are tired or feel run down like us adults. If thats the case and they don't go to school you may notice them sleeping in longer or more cranky at night where you may have to put them to bed earlier. But for a under 1 year old I think he will probably just maybe sleep in after his feeding or he may pass up eating for a couple days till he adjust but don't change the time. Let him make it just like when he was first born and he started feeding on you. It all work out for both of you the way it should. Take care!

time change is very hard on babies. Expect it to take 1 to 2 weeks to get him back on schedule.

He will be off by an hour - just gradually try to adjust his nap and bedtimes to get him back to where you want it.

Im trying to remember and I can't say I've ever experienced much of a change in sleeping patterns when the time changed. I think your little one will do better than you expect!

i am dreading this as well. my daughter has been getting up at 7 am on the dot every morning, which will put it at 6 am next week, ahh. it takes a few days to adjust, but i am hoping she will lay back down for a short nap (at least so i can shower) your baby goes to bed very early, you may want to adjust that a little.

the week before, i try to get my dtr to stay up an extra 5-10 mins so that way when she's going to bed at 9 and we fall back an hour then it's really 8, which is her normal time. she wakes up between 8-9, so she'll adjust that herself. hope this helps...

In fall the clocks go back 1 hour, not ahead. So he will be gaining 1 hour. He should be fine, just put him to bed maybe 30 minutes later than usual for 2 days leading up to it and it will even out.

If you are a stay at home mom, it shouldn't affect your baby at all. Their body clock will not change, just the clock in the house. If you treat their sleep and eat schedule the same as before the time change, feed them as if the clock didn't change (if they at at 12 before, they will eat at 1 now), they won't even feel the difference, but you might since you will inevitably go to bed and get up at the new times, and baby will want to go to bed and get up at the old times. This is what I always have done, works for me, but I don't have a set work schedule. Good luck.

Well hun, first of all - we fall back. :) This will give us an extra hour of sleep (for those of us who don't have early risers that is).

I always started to keep my kids up a bit longer the week before. Start with 15 mins and increase it until the night of the time change. By then hopefully the sleep schedule will be right on track with the time change!

Good Luck!

I was always worried about that...My mom always told me not to worry the kids will be fine.and she was always right.. I just let them stay up or put them to bed earlier and it became routine rather quickly..Don't sweat the small stuff..Stick with the times you use or change by 15 mins the first day or two and things will be totally fine...

GOOD LUCK...

Things will be off for a day or two, but other than that it will be like nothing. We are living in Germany currently and I'm always anxious with the 6 hour time change when we visit, but even that works itself out. With just an hour difference you can adjust how you want, but if it's a really big difference it's recommended to get up at your normal time and eat when the clock says you should even though you aren't hungry. Eventually things just fall back into place.

I agree with Julie... I was so worried, but then I found it was for no reason. My son bounced back after a day or two.

(I found that at the end of the day when it was dark, he was ready to go to bed faster than before the time change!)

Me on the other hand~ It takes me a week! LOL~

My little ones are now 3.5 and 5, and I think we experience more of an adjustment with them now that they are older than we did when they were babies. If I remember right, the first time our youngest fell back (she was 6 months) she just got an extra hour of sleep and wasn't as tired during the day. When the oldest sprung ahead (again about 6 months) she lost an hour of sleep at night but picked it up with an extra 30 minutes at each of her naps that day. By night, she was ready to go to bed at the same time and slept like normal. We make a big deal out of it, because we know how it affects us so get concerned about them. They don't seem to notice :)

My babies really didn't observe the time change...and by that I mean their internal clocks were already set. So, when the clocks 'fell back' an hour, my child was going to bed an hour later - because that's the normal time that they would go down. Good luck. Spring is the best, when everyone else begrudges the 'spring forward' - I actually get to sleep an hour later, since the kids don't wake until their normal time - regardless of what the clock says!

We "fall back" at this time. My kids did find with the time change as long as I adjusted their time by 15 minutes every few days until the transition was complete. Try putting your little one down 15 minutes early for three or four days then another 15 minutes for another three or four days and so on until he's back on track. Don't stress about it. It'll be an adjustment but he'll get it.

I was totally freaked out about it the first time we had a time change, and it ended-up not being a big deal. I moved their schedule in 15-minute increments, and within a week, they were moved to the appopriate time - no issue. It was really not a big deal.

Hi K.,
When my son was a baby I always worried each time the clock sprung ahead or fell back. I thought it would upset his sleep patterns........but you know what it never did. It took a day or two of putting him to bed 15 minutes earlier or later depending on the season and he adapted well.
I think we are all creatures that work by the sun and the moon so we naturaly adapt to the length of the days.
