Hi Moms, Help! My 4 year old daughter has been potty trained since she was 2 1/2, never an issue, always a good normal pee-er. But in the last month, (after a few nights in a row of bed wetting...) she is obsessed with going to the bathroom. Instead of 5 times a day, she is going about 10/15 times a day, just a little at a time. Not drinking excessive amounts of water or other drinks either, and the doctor says she has no medical condition. We try to tell her accidents are ok, and it is ok to try and go pee, she can try again later.....she once sat there for 45 minutes once, we ended that habit!
The part that is really getting to my husband and I is the waking in the night, sometimes 5 times, and she now NEEDS us to go with her.

Any suggestions from other moms with things you said or did to bring down the number of bathroom visits to a normal amount?

So What Happened?

Thank you Moms,
The Dr called on Monday and told me her urine test was clear, so I will be trying out some of the suggestions below.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to offer me some Mom Advice!

I am a nurse and was wondering more about the doctors assessment. It could be that she went though a growth spirt and the bladder has not caught up yet, but that does seem like a very high shift. Did the doctor test her urine at all? If so, then the problem is anatomical. If he did not test the urine, I think you need to start with that. There could be several reasons for the frequent urination with a bladder infection being one explanation. Go back to a urologist if you do not get any resolution from your doctor. Best of luck!

This happened to my daughter and we found out it was a UTI.
Urinary Tract Infection...We didn't realize it until she was in pain and 104 fever. It was the worst week ever and the medacine was bad! Take her in to your pediatrician and they'll do a urin test to be safe, it is very common in girls. Best Wishes.

Did the Dr do a urine analysis or culture? A lot of the time urine frequency or urgency is do to an infection. It does not always have to burn when you have a bladder infection. Hopefully she does not have a stone.
Good luck.

Hi C. -
I remember being a little girl going to the Forest Preserve with my family probably around 5 years old. I had the same problem; I felt the continuous need to go, though hardly anything came out. Turned out I had a bladder infection. I agree with the nurse; take her to the dr. Now as an adult I've had many bladder infections. They can be painful or not; just feeling the need to constantly go. I guess I remember it so well as it was so upsetting for me and the whole family. The smell in those forest preserve outhouses is horrible and I just couldn't leave and my mom didn't want to leave me there! Hope she's better soon!

As with everything, this is probably a phase and will pass. My daughter went through a phase like this. What we did to save our sanity and our sleep was to set up a potty chair at night time next to her bed and make it clear that if she had to go that she would have to go on the potty chair and she would not be accompanied by us to the bathroom. After a few nights, she got over it.

I went thru the same thing with my now 8 yr old son when he was 4. His dr actually gave us a printout on this VERY common issue in 4-5 yr old kids calling it something specific (like "kindergarten urination" or something), but I don't recall the name at this time. It is stress related (our episode lasted for about 2 months prior to his 5th bday). He never verbalized that anything was bothering him, but it went away right after his bday. We chalked it up to him anticipating his bday and party (the stressful life of a 5 yr old). More importantly, his dr advised us to completely ignore it, which we did. It was annoying watching him run to the bathroom 10 - 20 times a day and barely pee each time, but I think the less attention he got for it, the better it was. I'm sure it will go away soon!!!
