Unicef

My church doesn't celebrate Halloween but my daughter who goes to public school loves the holiday. The two older ones love to dress up on a daily basis and this is the one day a year that they can wear them outside the house and poeple give them candy to do it!! So, in order to make it a lesson to them and not just about candy I sent away for the packet for Unicef. Now my husband (who doesn't go to church so it's not about that) says he doesn't want the kids doing it because he says it shows them that if they just ask people for money they will get it and also because people already spent money on candy and now we are also asking them for money. I think this is ridiculous! I did Unicef as a kid but he has never heard of it. Does anyone have any thoughts??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, my oldest daughter ended up going to a party at church and not trick or treating at all. She was much better about it than I thought she would be. My son went trick or treating...without the unicef box...I thought he would only last a couple houses anyway as he is super shy...we ended up going all over the neighborhood. It was a great Halloween. Next year he will be old enough to join my daughter at the church party but I will still have the youngest to deal with...

Does your husband know what Unicef is? Maybe if he gets a little more educated his mind will change. I know that when I was in school, they actually passed the Unicef collection boxes out in school. As long as your kids know what they are collecting money for it shouldn't put people off. The only reason I can think of that someone wouldn't agree with it would be political and usually people are willing to overlook their political views when it comes to kids. Good Luck!

hi. i tend to agree with your husband. we give money to unicef directly, but i get a little peeved when i get door-to-door solicitation. last month, i bought seven boxes of candy for our neighborhood elementary school kids' PTA drive. how do you say "no" to little kids? and as your husband points out, i already pay taxes for our schools.

maybe you could just hand out cards suggesting donations to unicef. or if you want your children to learn the value of giving, you could ask them to send a small portion of their allowance to unicef instead.

just my thoughts.

The truth is if you allow your kids to take part in halloween unicef or not the most important lesson they are going to learn is that their values are not important. You have probably told them no before on this issue but have changed your mind for some reason and I can see you are trying to justify your own decision. your husband is probably picking up on this but doesn't want to tell you outright. I was also raised in a religion that did not celebrate halloween but we knew the important reason behind it. I am no longer a member of that religion so I have no moral stance on the halloween issue at present. However, there is still importance in being consistant with your children. So wether or not you decide to stand by your religion on this or not, think about the real lesson your children are learning. Dressing up, candy and charity can be done on any day. The lessons our parents teach us last our life and shape our opinions of our parents. Teach your children to do the right thing even if sometimes it's not the fun thing. believe me they will thank you later and you will feel better about yourself too.

My kids do Unicef every year. They know what the whole reason behind it is and why we do it. We have really supportive neighbors who are great about donating. I think about 3 years ago we raised well over $200. Even if you are just asking for a quarter, its the reason behind the orange box. Maybe if you go out you can make up a flier to pass out to those who do donate explaining the whole Unicef thing. It makes people a bit more easy letting a dollar or two go into it.
