Hello,

My 2 yr old daughter has an unexplained rash on her left side, arm, leg and torso. I've had her seen by her pediatrician and she gave us some cream with a steroid in it and asked me to give her Benadryl for the itching. It helped for a while but she keeps having flare ups. I had her seen by a dermatologist. He said it was viral because the rash was so faint. She continues to have flares up. It's not viral. I have changed her detergent, my bath wash, her lotion and washed all her clothes, including car seat covers and stroller cover. It's definitely some type of contact dermatitis. But I am at a loss. I am going crazy trying to figure it out. She’s had it for 4 weeks now. Help!
P.S. The rash is red and bumpy.

Super conerned mom,
R.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for all your advice and feedback.
I raised my concerns with my pediatrician and she encouraged me to take my daughter to a dermatologist. That dermatologist said it was viral and to keep using cream pediatrician prescribed. Going on 4 weeks I seeked a second opinion with another dermatologist. He examined my daughter's rash and asked if she had a cold before the rash? I said no but mentioned she had the flu shot. He said she could have had a reaction to the shot. He said it's definitely viral. The rash did not appear to be contact dermatitis. He prescribed desonate gel. That was Monday and as of today my daughter has had a bad flare up. She has the rash on her torso, back of both arms, back of right leg and on top of both feet. It seems as of heat makes it flare up. I am at a loss. I hate to see my child this way. Help.....

I would talk to the dermatologist again they may need to biopsy it. My son had an unexplained rash a few years ago and they thought it was viral and ended up it's not but they would not have knows without a biopsy or it. His is a crazy weird skin condition but heat including warm water made it flair even more.

Could it be eczema or psoriases?
Or possibley a reaction to what she is eating?

Since you've done all the things like wash her clothes, car seat cover, stroller cover, changed your detergent, maybe ask the ped/dermatologist if it could one of the things I mentioned OR a reaction to food in her diet?
Best of luck to your little one!

Heat rash?
Google heat rash, and look at the "images" of heat rash, and see if your daughter's looks similar. There are different types of heat rash too.
My son had a rash recently, and it was heat rash.

Does the rash cause her pain or itching or anything?
There is also a cream called "Florasone Cardiospermum" cream, which is for skin conditions/eczema/rashes etc. and is all natural. You can find it at places like Whole Foods and natural food places.

Also, does she eat any citrus? Oranges or orange juice for example, causes a rash/eczema in my Mom. So does anything with Oatmeal in it.

Since it is all on her LEFT side.... is that the side she sleeps on?????
Via your daily observations of her and her activities, what is she doing, mostly that is with her left, side?

My first thought is some sort of allergy, either something she's exposed to or something she's eating. I'd probably be inclined to rule out a food allergy by doing an elimination diet on her. Allergies can develop with anyone at any time so even if she's been eating something with no prior issues there's always a chance that 1 can develop.

Does anyone in the house wear some sort of fragrance or perfume? I've been allergic to perfume since I was a baby. If it touches my skin I break out in a rash. If someone is wearing it and hugs me, I start to itch. It could be that or even the make up you wear or the handsoap you use. I was also allergic to certain dyes in clothing I wore. Do you use dryer sheets in the dryer? Those can cause rashes too. If so you should change to the dryer balls.

I think maybe you should have the dermatologist test your daughter for different things to see if they can determine what it is. Good luck!

Could she have brushed up against some poison oak? My daughters got into some poison oak and that rash hung around for over a month before we got rid of it.

She is super young for it, but it could be shingles. I actually had shingles for the first time when I was five years old. It was truly awful. Shingles happens only on one side of the body at a time. I'm surprised that the pediatrician and dermatologist have no good answers for you. I would try yet another doctor. Good luck and please update if you get a diagnosis!
