Undershirts or No Undershirts?

My mother insisted that come late October my children (2 and 3 year olds) should be wearing undershirts beneath thier regular shirts and/or Sweaters and PJs at all times. Recently someone told me that her pediatrician told her that you should dress your children just like you would dress yourself to be comfortable with the weather. So now that they changed sizes do I go get undershirts or not????

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you thank you thank you all!!!! I am going to go with my gut instead of my mother's rules. In the dead of winter when we go outside to play of course I will put lots of layers on but if they are going to be in preschool learning and not going outside why bother. I just do not want them to get too warm when inside because some places set the heat high. I feel like a compedent mother again!!!

Well I agree with the advice you go... my mom always tells me to dress my son how I would dress. So if I was cold and dressed warm.... dress my son warm. Now about the undershirt thing. Personally I'd wear undershirts on my son when it gets really cold. We live in an old drafty house and to save money we keep the heat low in the winter time, so I have always had undershirts on him. It all boils down to do you think they need them?

Hello L.,

I am a nurse at a Dr.'s office. There are 7 doctors who provide care for infants through the more elder population. All of them agree that infants and children should be dressed in the same manner that you would dress for the weather. Layers that could be removed is best. I dress in layers and dressed my own children in this manner. My son is 24 years old and my daughter 11 years old. They both continue to dress the same way even after all of these years. Hope this helps you!

Hi L.,
My Mom was the same way! I feel that when you wear shirts that ride up or don't cover the belly or back at all times, then that is a good time to wear a onesy or a long undershirt tucked in.

There is nothing worse, in the COLD weather, than seeing a toddler or baby being carried outside with their bare belly showing. I freeze for them.

Use your best judgement...

L.,
Do you wear undershirts? I don't. I do always put a t-shirt under the kids clothes in case we are somewhere and they get too warm. I go with the light layers idea so we are alway comfortable, but I don't up undershirts on under that. It seems like overkill. Comfort is the key. If the sweater they have on is scratchy, then yes something so they don't get annoyed. Just remember as long as your kids and happy and healthy it doesn't matter what they have on or what someone else things you should do. :)

I like layers, but usually skip the undershirt until it's really cold in the winter months. I will add a onesie a little sooner for the baby, but I drop that after about 12-18 months. I think it was a bigger thing years ago.

I am a new grandparent, so I am new to this telling my daughter what to do. I would suggest not using undershirts beneath regular shirts, but if a sweater has more hole in and the wind can get through I would suggest to wear undershirts. Back when I was young we had to wear many layers of clothing and I thought it was very stupid. The only thing I say is do what you feel. You can take advice from all, but you are the MOM.

Use your power!!!

I constantly wear undershirts on my kids when they are under 3 years old in the fall and winter months. But, once
they're older I only wear them if its really cold out or if they have short or loose shirts that the cool air might
go up. Totally your call, especially since your kiddos are older. :)

The peds I've taken my kids to gave the same advice...dress them as you would dress yourself for comfort. I occassionally dress my kids with 2 shirts if I feel the need - in really cold weather, if we are going outside, if we are in a drafty house. I don't necesarily always have standard white undershirts on hand so I might layer any t-shirt under a long sleeve shirt or a turtle neck under a sweater or a button down shirt unter a loose-fitting t-shirt for example.

Thats a personal choice. My son I'd layer when it was COLD out but not really in the fall. For example this past Saturday we went to the pumpkin farm, and he wore a tee shirt, long sleeve shirt then a sweat shirt on top. I layerd him. It was 65 that day.

Now normally, I base my choice of wardrobe on where we are going and how the temp. will be.....

Your mom is old fashion, most are, go with YOUR gut.

Okay, the way I have always understood it is that you dress your children like you would dress for the most part. That being said, I believe an undershirt underneath would depend on what they are wearing on top and where you are going to be. If you are going to the park on a brisk day, an undershirt underneath with a sweatshirt on top may be more convenient and appropriate that say a bulky jacket or a jacket that your child won't leave zipped. Also, if you are going to be taking the kids out to play in the snow, you want to layer and an undershirt is a good place to start. However, if they really aren't going to wear them often, you can substitute a regular t-shirt for an undershirt on those occasions that you think you may need them. Personally, I would probably buy them a pack of them each. Not enough to wear everyday but a few to have on hand in case they are needed. My kids also wear them to bed on occasion.

Basically, it is up to you whether or not to buy them. They are not necessary (since you have other options) but they can be helpful.

I hope this helps.
