Hello Mamas,

We are planning to spend 2 weeks in the Detroit area of Michigan in January. We live in Tucson, AZ, and as such, are unaccustomed to real winters. :) Our baby will be 1 year old at the time, quite possibly walking by then. What kinds of clothes should I get for her for this trip? How cold can we expect it to be?

Thanks for any advice in advance!!!

What can I do next?

Well being from Michigan myself I have to say at this time of year it is freezing specially for someone that is from AZ way different... I definately reccommend getting baby long johns to ut on him/her little sweat outfits (warm but comfortable) long sleeves..mittens (they do make for toddlers), hats, heavy lined coats, they have whats called baby bundles or snow suits for them as well, warm socks/booties & a good pair of tennis shoes.. If you can I would suggest taking a trip to Payson/showlow walmart's or kmarts as they do carry better selections of the colder weather clothes... Have fun..

I grew up there and lived there until several years after college. You want to think about dressing in layers. It will be cold outside, but you'll roast once you get in a house or store or car with those bulky clothes on. A long sleeve shirt is a good start and a sweater over that that can be taken off if need be. You definately need a warm coat, hat and mittens. If you plan on spending some time on outside activities then some long johns are good to have as well as snowpants or snowsuit and boots. Kneesocks are good for boots so the snow doesn't get down to you feet as easily. Warm jammies are a must. An extra blanket is good to have in the car too. By January it will be cold!! It will probably be around zero or below at night, daytime temps can vary from high 30's to zero. It's kinda hard to predict. Its more the wind that gets you than the cold. I remember school being canceled because of the windchill being to cold, not the actual temps. Whatever you don't have you can get at Meijers (like a superwalmart) or find a consignment store.

How cold? Pretty damn cold! :) (usually!) And I grew up here and live in the area now, so I know!

Get a winter coat and snowpants, or a snowsuit - even there happens to not be any snow, they will keep her warm. Hat, mittens, boots for outside too if she will be in the snow. Otherwise shoes. Have a blanket for inside the car (it will warm up but can be really chilly at first).

I dress my daughter is layers, even in the house. She typically has an undershirt on, plus at least one more layer (long-sleeved t-shirt, hooded sweatshirt, or a sweater.) For sleeping, she has either flannel or fleece pajamas, and I keep the undershirt on with the pajamas as well as socks - they will help keep them warm and then they sleep better.

Hope this helps! Happy travels!

Well, if you're not planning on playing in the snow, then you don't need full on snow pants for her. Layers are best. Get her some long johns/thermals or some slim/snug fitting pjs, or even sweater tights works well under clothes. Normal shoes should be fine because even if she is walking, you can carry her to the car. She will need a hat, mittens and scarf. Again, if she's not actually going to be playing in the snow for a long time, sweater mittens are fine. And a coat - don't go overboard poofy though because they are not safe in carseats. Get a decent weight/thickness of coat and then layer underneath, Tshirt, longsleeve, sweatshirt, coat. Really, if you're just going from house to car, car to building it's not that bad and you actually want to make sure that you don't overdress her! Feel her tummy and back to make sure she is not overheating! IF you are planning on playing in the snow (which at barely 1yr old won't last for long) get her snow boots and either snow pants or a one piece snow suit in addition. Also, make sure you have at least two pairs of the sweater mittens and you can double them up for playing with snow. An extra hat is a good idea too just in case. Ask you people in Detroit to look for things for you, I'm assuming these things are not readily available in Tucson. Also if they have kids, they very likely have extra hats, scarves and mittens around!

Very very cold. Not sure of temp range but you could look that up.
She needs long sleeve shirts, sweaters, hat and she could probably
use a one piece snowsuit type of outerwear. You can look at LL Bean
to get an idea and then just get something somewhere else no as
expensive.I doubt you will be outside for a long period of time at any
given time. Of course, some sort of foot covering, i.e. Robeez etc.

i moved from california to minnesota a couple of years ago and it is freezing out this way right now. A good pair of snow pants, boots, jacket, gloves, and mittens will be a necessity. But coming from hot AZ, you will need to pack some of the clothes your baby wore there because as you move eastward it will get colder but not right away. Think layers for each day of travel. You should probably invest in a facemask too. It is sooooooooooooo cold and makes little noses numb!

January is Detroit's coldest month. The average temperature ranges from 17.8°F to 31.1°F. Get her the warmest snuggliest clothes you can find. And make sure a good hat...one with ear flaps because those cover much of the cheeks too.

Pretty cold. I am from MI and now live in NJ. Whenever I go home, its always so much colder there then in NJ. I don't know about snowpants, but definitely a think coat, sweatpants, or the fleece lined jeans they sell at old navy. Layer her. Get long sleeve t-shirts and some sweaters to go over them. Hat and gloves are a MUST.
We have gone to MI many time in the winter and I never had snowpants for my son (who is now 3) but I did always have lots of warm clothes. We did just fine.

Hi R.,

I'm from the Detroit area and travel back all the time with my kids.

Although it's a mindtrip to imagine a place being so cold when you're living in the desert, just remember it IS cold. I would not bring short sleeves, unless for use in the hotel or home you're staying in if the heat will be cranked up very high. The temps are freezing in January! Sweats, heavy sweaters, I used to wear double socks and slippers, and heavy winter coats are a must. Also, if your child might want to toddle around outdoors, snow boots might make a good investment (I'd just purchase them there). Mittens, hats and scarves of you. Blankets for the baby. Bundle that baby up!

The temps usually hang around 20 degrees F in January. The warmest you may get, if you're lucky, is in the 40's -- and the breezes off of near-frozen lakes are COLD. Pack very warm clothes.

Despite the freezing cold temps, it can be really pretty when it snows. Enjoy your trip. Please don't let anything I told you here get you down about it. It's cold, but if you dress appropriately, you'll be more likely to focus on more than how cold it is!

Have a great trip!

I live in Phoenix---moved from Detroit 3 years ago. The most important thing is to cover her skin. Just like out here where we worry about the skin getting burned---skin in Michigan can get frost-bitten in a couple of minutes. Cover her skin with a scarf and mittens. It is VERY cold there---and very damp. Chills you to the bone.
