Ultram (Tramadol) - Side Effects

I posted a question a few nights ago about my wrist. I ended up going to urgent care the next day and found out that I had fractured it. The urgent care doctor has me on Tramadol to relieve the pain. After I take the medication, I am fine for a while. After about 3 hours though the side effects kick in BAD! I can hardly sit up because I am so lightheaded. At work (Where I stand all day as a cashier), I can hardly walk straight, let alone think straight. The reason I asked for the pain killers was so that I could get through work, because without them I am miserable. I am so nauseous. I can't move without feeling the need to throw up. I haven't taken any since 11pm last night, and the side effects are still making me miserable. I haven't even been able to take care of my son. He's been playing on the floor in a fenced in area all day. I don't want to even think about trying to eat something right now (I forced a cereal bar down this morning). This is horrible!!!

My Dr wants me to have an MRI done before he sees me, and he won't prescribe me anything unless he sees me. So it's basically stop taking the pain meds and be miserable because of the pain, or take them and be miserable because of the side effects. Which is the lesser evil?

What can I do next?

Neither.

Call and tell your doc your pain meds are making you lightheaded and nauseous and unable to function... and ask to bring them in and trade them for something else.

People have different reactions to pain meds... docs are used to switching things around if you don't have a 'pain killer of choice'. Many will have you bring in the evil scrip, while many others will just get you a different scrip for something else. But it's ALWAYS good business to offer to bring in the icky one, because it negates the 'drug seeking' from being a concern.

I was also prescribed tramadol for a cyst in my wrist and needed intensive surgery. I felt this way the first day I took it, call the dr, and was told to cut it in half. If you have an XR (extended release) you might want to call the pharmacist and see if that will make it worse.. I did take it before bed, slept great and since it was cut in half I felt okay, no pain, with no dizziness the next day. Hope this helps.. good luck and feel better!!!!

I can NOT take Tramadol...I have taken it before bed for the arthritis in my back (when it's bad) and I'm fine all night, then pukey ALL day the next day...and I run a daycare...that does not work for me...I just take Aleve, ibuprofen or tylenol for my pain, w/ an occasional muscle relaxer if really in pain! If it's making you sick, stop taking it...there are plenty of other options! Trust me, I've had my share of surgeries and broken bones! Good luck!

I had issues if I took the full dose of, oh what the hell is it called, ya know the stuff House is addicted to. If you take two pills try taking one. I was fine with one, two made me too sick to function. Then again one took great care of the pain.

Tramadol is strong stuff. I have fibromyalgia and my doctor prescribes it that I could take it one tablet three times a day, but I never take it that often, only one when I feel as if I'm going to pass out from the pain. The rest of the time I take 800 mg of ibuprofen. And, with either of these meds I have to eat a meal (half a sandwich or a glass of milk isn't enough) before taking it or I get extreme nausea with the Tramadol and severe stomach pains with the ibuprofen.

Call your doctor and explain what's happening, possibly there is something else you can take that won't cause such severe side effects.

Personally, the pain would be more tolerable than dizziness and nausea. I am used to pain as I have Rheumatoid arthritis, but can't handle dizziness and nausea. It sounds like you are less functional on the Tramadol. Can you take 800 mg of ibuprofen without it bothering your stomach? If so, I'd start there, and decrease if you need to. It may not relieve all the pain, but it may make a dent. Do you have a soft brace to support your wrist? They sell them at any drug store, but you may have to be careful of the splint kind because depending on how you broke your wrist it may hold it in the wrong position. I don't know the protocol on ice and heat with a broken bone, but you could call a nurse line and ask...

I was recently prescribed Ultram for back pain. The first pill I took made me feel light headed and weird. The next day when I took another one, I didn't feel light headed or weird anymore, but it made my heart race and I could not sleep. I called the dr and he told me that lots of people can not tolerate that medicine. I ended up getting a script of vicodin for a few days until the pain went away. Go see the dr and ask for something else. I hope you feel better.
