Ultra Sound Tech - Argyle,TX

I'm interested in learning more about becoming an ultra sound tech. I've looked on line and it keeps directing me to online schools, which would be fine for the basics. But when I ask for more info about becoming an ultra sound tech, they don't do it and don't have any info for me. They ask if I want to be a nurse instead... Does anyone know where I can look for info, who to call or what schools to look at? Thanks!

So What Happened?

***Looked at 4 local colleges and nothing has shown up for ultrasound tech. It doesn't have to be obstetrics, I know that it is now used in many situations. I guess try calling the local hospitals is the next step. I've been frustrated because looking online keeps throwing me back to online schools and that won't work for this type of degree.

I just started looking into this too and have been frustrated to no end. Never thought to look at the community college (duh!) I am very interested to see what other responses you get.

I would start by checking with your local community college and see what they say. They may be able to point you in the right direction if they don't offer the program. Good Luck!!

The direction provided below is totally correct. Go through your local community college. At the massive hospital where I work, we typically only accept those trained through programs we have existing relationships with.

Also, but not to discourage you, typically the only way you can get into an institution is start by working PRN, which generally means, we need you we call and you come and you get no benefits. Also, if you primarily want to to Obstetrics Sonography, the market is flooded right now as the Texas birthrate is WAY down.

Updated: I think you might be looking under the wrong terms. I found this for Dallas County:

I teach nursing at a small college in OK. We also offer associate degrees in sonography and radiography. I would definitely call around to local community colleges and other 2 year institutions. I'm not sure how good an online program would be in preparing you. When I was pregnant, I went to their clinicals so the students could practice scanning me, no matter what they are studying they practice on actual people. Good luck, it's a good field to be getting into!

There is probably a society for Ultrasound techs out there - each medical title has their own association with all kinds of information that can point you in the right direction. Google Ultrasound association and see what you come up with.

There always seems to be a shortage of ultrasound techs around here - I think it's a good field to investigate.

AS others have suggested, community college is the way to go! Also, maybe call an actual ultra sound center for recommendations. Maybe you can "shadow" one for a day.

El Centro college has an Ultrasound Technologist program, but that's long commute from Argyle.

Change your search to Sonographer or Licensed Sonographer, that may help. Tyler Junior College offers that degree, one of my friends went through the program about 6 yrs ago. It is very difficult to get admitted into and definitely a lot of hard work. She graduated and absolutely loves her career, so it was worth it for her! Good luck!
