Ultasound Scan Reliability

Good day all, My self and my wife went to see the OB some days back due to the sever nausea and vomiting condition of my pregnant wife. She usually throw up whatever she eats immediately, like 5 times in a day. The OB advised she should go for an ultrasound scan. The scan reveals two sacs indicating twin pregnancy. However, one of the sacs appears bigger than the other. When a vagina scan was done by the Radiologist, it shows that my wife is 6 weeks and 4 days pregnant. Now the scary part, the fetus in the big sac does not show any sign of breathing whille the fetus in the small sac showed steady breathing throughout the scan. The Radiologist has asked us to come back for another scan in 2 weeks but we are worried. Can someone please offer some form of insight into the scenario playing out? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

@ Riley J, sorry about the misrepresentation in my earlier write-up. Instead of using breathing, I should have said pulsating movement. I totally agree with you that the fetus are not breathing yet, however the point is that one fetus showed signs of steady pulsating movement while the second fetus doesnt. Thanks

idk mine went on heartbeats at first. did they hear both heartbeats? (or three wife included). the larger baby might have been sleeping and slowed his/her breathing where they could not clearly see if baby was breating?? either way God works wonders. Many prayers for your wifes nausea and your two babies. There is always a second opnion.

Sounds a little odd to me... that early you are lucky if you hear a heart beat. They certainly are not breathing yet...

What did the OB say about the ultrasound results? I would trust the OB's interpretation much more than the radiologist. And was it it the radioligist who spoke with you or the just the tech who did the scan? Vastly different levels of training...

(I do not mean that as a dig against the folks who do the scans, at my OB's the ladies who do the scans are excellent at what they do)

I would say that it's possible one twin is not growing and the other one is at this time. Please just help her stay calm and think about positive things. This must be stressful for both of you.

Either you're completely wrong about gestation, or you misheard the radiologist.

At 6 weeks a fetus is smaller than a pencil eraser, the little tadpole is JUST developing a spine, and while the beginnings of heart is pumping blood you're LUCKY if you can hear a heartbeat... and there aren't lungs, yet / no mouth or nose yet/ no breathing. ((At 7 weeks a face/brain starts kicking into gear, but no face and no lungs = no breathing))

This early it is more of a flicker on the monitor did they see 2 flickers, was heartbeats detected? If so was the one in question slower or not at all? Some will say it is too early but with all 4 of my singletons heartbeats were detected via vaginal/sonogram 5 weeks and the doppler at 7-8 weeks.Did you get a chance to speak to the OB in regards to the ultrasound? If not call the office the nurse can answer your question all they do is pull your chart the Dr. has written his report and the radiologist

I had the same situation with my twin pregnancy, but I was also spotting heavily. one OB put me on bed rest with Progestarone shots every day for a week, but when I got a second opinion a week later, the other OB said everything was fine though I was spotting. Some times when it is this early, the scans can be a bit misleading, time is of essence. I had my twins at full term and they are healthy.

I know this is stressfull and difficult, but staying calm is essential and please ask more questions, the doctors should answer them to help you.

Take care and good luck

Well, it's still really early, try not to stress. Only time will tell. With my last I had my first ultrasound at around 9 weeks and it showed that there was a twin but it didn't make it past 6 weeks. Sometimes it's referred to as "the vanishing twin syndrome".
As for the nausea, I can't really help but I've been there. Nothing helped for me except getting through the first trimester. My Ob told me as long as whatever I'm eating is staying at least 10 minutes then it'll do some good. She suggested homemade chicken soup (broth), which we were already doing.
Hang in there.
