Two Heartbeats - Unsure If It Is Twins?

Hi - I am hoping for some insight. I had an ultrasound today, very early ~6 weeks, and the Dr. immediately found the baby and heartbeat. After she was done, she looked around and found another flickering spot which she thought might be another baby's heartbeat, but she wasn't sure. She said it might also be the umbilical cord for the first baby. However, the second flicker was not located near enough from my experience to be the umbilical cord for a 6-week old pregnancy. Has this ever happened to anyone else, and did it end up being twins or something different? I am supposed to go back for another scan in 1 week, however I would have thought that if she could see 2 heart beats, a definitive answer regarding twins or not would be easy to make?

Thanks for your help - obviously we are very confused, and 1 week seems like a horribly long time to wait to find out something like this!

So What Happened?

Thanks for your answers! I had my appointment today, and much to my Dr's surprise there was only one baby. I was honestly relieved as I didn't know how I would handle twins on top of my 20-month old daughter. Now I'm hoping I can relax and enjoy the rest of this pregnancy!

There are a few reasons to hear 2 heartbeats... Could be an echo from the baby's heart in the womb, the umbilical cord, or even an echo from your own blood returning through your body. I know it's tough to wait!! The only sure fire way of knowing for sure is to deliver... now THAT'S a long ways away!!

Good luck :)

Hi there. I know it hard to wait but that's pretty much all there is to do now. Hang in there. When I went in for my 1st ultrasound for my second pregnancy (with my son and hubby) the dr. came in and starting the ultrasound when I immediatly saw something else in there. At that point the dr. went quite and excused herself to "find another dr." I was so worried and didn't know what to think. I looked over at my hubby and he was quite and didn't say much. Needless to say another dr. came in and confirmed it was another baby we were gonna have twins (as weird as it sounds it almost was like a joke). My thoughts are with you. I hope you keep everyone posted :)

Not sure about the heartbeats, but at my 6 week ultrasound it was pretty clear on the screen that I was having fraternal twins. The 2 sacs were very visible, did you see anything like that?

We found out twins at 8 weeks. It was very obvious there were two in there. the minute he turned on the ultrasound machine, I saw it, my husband saw it, and the doctor saw it. He didn't have to say anything, I knew there were two babies in me. It's very possible you're having twins, but to see a second heartbeat means the doctor most likely would've seen a second sac. Also, you're still very early. At 5.5 weeks my doctor couldn't see twins - there was only one that he found (not that he was looking for two). Don't worry, though. In one more week you will know for sure. :)
