We did IVF and could see the sacs and heartbeats at 6 weeks. I agree that you need to have someone with top-notch equipment. Fortunately, this time around my peri and OB both had state of the art equipment.
I am 9 weeks pregnant and went in for my fist U/S yesterday. We saw a healthy looking baby, the sac, and then another structure. The midwife was having a hard time seeing what it was. I don't think the machine was great becuase I have seen a lot better pictures that other people have had. Anyway, I have another appointment in about a week and a half to "rule out twins". I was wondering if this has happened to anyone and if so, what was the outcome?

My second spot ended up being a subchorionic hematoma. I had a major bloody show at week 8 that I felt 100% certain was a miscarriage. We were halfway up to a mountain resort and it was about 10hrs later that we got the news that we still had a heartbeat. My husband was disappointed but I'm happy to be around six weeks out from a single perfectly healthy baby!
Congrats either way! :)
At 9 weeks most if not all ultrasound machines or techs should be able to tell you if there are 2. And the heartbeat is clearly visible way earlier than that, if she was at all skilled she would have seen that or other organs or structures. I saw a heartbeat at not quite 6 weeks with my second pregnancy. My twins (1st pregnancy) were discovered at 7 weeks (identical but each in their own sac)with the run of the mill u/s machine in my docs office. I did however have a third structure--discovered at that time as well. Basically it was an empty sac, empty area or fluid filled area on the u/s. They really couldn't tell me much about it or why it happened. It was gone at my next u/s. So in my opinion if it were a viable "twin" your midwife would have been able to see that. Chances are it is something else, sorry. Your body usually absorbs these things. But if this other structure was within the main baby's sac then the possibilities of what it could be are many. Good luck!
A friend of a friend was told after her ultrasound that she was having a little boy. Turned out to be twin girls.
Ultrasounds are great but even the best machines aren't effective if the baby/babies aren't cooperative in their positioning.
Good luck!
they spotted my twins immediatly during my u/s at about 7 weeks..but I had 2 sacs which was very obvious! They should have been able to look at your levels to look to see if they were extremely high as well. Hopefully they will do an internal u/s on you so that they can get the closest view possible. Good Luck, be sure to come back and let us know your outcome.
At eight weeks I was told I was pregnant with twins by my ob/gyn after an ultrasound had been performed. I would definitely suggest you got to your ob/gyn for confirmation and then follow up from there! Congrats on one - and possibly two!

Hey J.,
We conceived using IVF and were pregnant with twins until somewhere between 9 and 10 weeks. One of our babies was just not that healthy and we knew that from the start.
This being said, if you find out you are pregnant with twins, the typical "What to Expect When You are Expecting" book is not enough. Be sure to purchase these two books which came highly recommended to me from a multiples club:
When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads by Dr. Barbara Luke and Ready or Not...Here We come! by Elizabeth Lyons.
Unfortunately, I did not start with these books and I wish I had. The nutritional information changes drastically from a singleton to a twin pregnancy.
Make sure someone more highly qualified than a midwife does the ultrasound so you can make sure problems are ruled out.
Hi J.-
At 6 weeks I had my ultrasound and they found what looked like two sacks with a dot in each sack. One dot was much bigger then the other and they weren't sure that the second dot was going to make it. When I went back in at I think 12 weeks, I only had the one sack with my daughter in it. So I guess my body absorbed the second sack & dot. They said it's really normal, just most people don't have ultrasounds before 12 weeks.
Good Luck!
Yep -- two sacs at first & had to wait it out until the next ultrasound. But had one healthy son. I'm told it happens a lot. Congrats!
