Twins? - Greeley,IA

I took 3 pregnancy tests last week, a really cheap store brand and then two digital ones, all three said positive, and then the doctors test said positive. Then in my ultrasound they couldn't see anything, so they did blood work. They said I was only two weeks. I really didn't think the home tests were supposed to be able to tell until about 4 weeks. Could it be because I have more than one baby in me?? I just read that you can tell it might be twins because of extra HCG and maybe that is why the tests said positive so soon? AAAAH HELP!

What can I do next?

I tested positive 2 weeks after conceiving. Even at 8 weeks, my doctor couldn't see anything in the ultrasound. Just could hear the heartbeat.

This is not really making a lot of sense. There is really no such thing as two weeks pregnant. It has to be a misunderstanding. We date pregnancy back to your last period, so for two of the weeks you are not really pregnant; meaning when someone has been pregnant for 4 Weeks, they really have had fertilization and implantation for only 2 weeks. Basically 2 weeks are just for dating purposes. Doees that make sense?
If you had 4 positive pregnancy test, you are in deed pregnant, unless it is a molar pregnancy. In this case, you will get a positive test but nothing fertilized has actually implanted. This would show up on an ultrasound though as an empty sac. In the OB world, we really do not like to perform US prior to 6 weeks of age though, because that is when everything is truly visable. You will then get a little herat beat and a yolk sac present. The only time before that is if ruling out etopic pregnancy. Most women unless a size 4, you can not see much on US prior to 6 weeks either unless a vaginal US was performed. So right now, I suggest just waiting out the next few weeks and see how things go. Once you get a little more along, you can then worry about what and how many you are carrying.... Good Luck and I hope this helps!

It's not very likely. I had twins my first pregnancy, and the home test showed positive four days before my missed period. I'm carrying a singleton now, and my home test also showed positive four days before. I'm thinking the doctor meant two weeks since ovulating. When you are actually two weeks pregnant is when you ovulate, so there is no way you'd actually know if you were pregnant, even if you were carrying twins.

It sounds like they meant two weeks gestational age which would be four weeks since your last period. At that time pregnancy test do show up as positive (I have had positive pregnancy tests as early as 3 weeks post period....no twins). If you have your next appointment in a month I am sure things will be cleared up at that time. I think you have about a 3% chance of having twins naturally. So chances are you just have one baby. Good luck!

I had a positive test 2 weeks after conception, but that would have actually placed me at being about 4 weeks pregnant. I was not getting my period back than so there was no way to determine pregnancy with that method, but we did know when we conceived so they kind of went that route. I had one baby in that pregnancy and very very high hormone levels! If your testing positive you're pregnant give it a few more weeks so the baby can grow a bit and be visable in an ultrasound. Congrats now just sit back and relax!

I think you just tested at the very earliest and got the positive. Call your doc and have them verify what they mean by 2 weeks. Usually the count starts at the beginning of your cycle and the 2 week mark is about the time you'd ovulate if you have a regular 28 day cycle. Maybe they were refering to 2 weeks since conception?

I wouldn't worry too much about carrying twins. With my youngest (6mos) I had very high Hcg levels, and actually with my 3yr old as well! They did an early ultrasound with me to make sure, but only because twins run in my family!
Good luck & congrats on the baby!

You're actually 'pregnant' for up to 2 weeks before implantation inside the uterus happens. Does the dr. mean you've only just implanted, or you've been implanted for about 2 weeks?

well I have heard that if you are having twins you can have higher HCG levels and therefore have a positive result very early on. But with my last 3 pregnancies I got a positive pregnancy test at the two week mark and with each I was only having one baby. I think the test are just getting better and can detect sooner. But I guess the question is two weeks from what? Your last period or from when you ovulated? cause really what happens is the doc. decides your due date from your last period but you don't ovulate until about two weeks after that and then you take a test two weeks after that. So yeah you are really only about 2 weeks along when you can get a positive result but the doc's consider you to already be four weeks cause of the date of your last period. So your probably fine but your could have twins. Does that run in your family? If not then again your probably only carrying one baby.

Pregnancy tests are more sensitive to HCG levels than they used to be, way earlier than 4 weeks. Once they are able to start to measure the baby and fluid levels, a more accurate estimation of how far along you are can be made. Twins are a possibility of course, but I wouldn't say that is the sole answer either.
