I have to say I love turnips but I can't stand the smell. I really do think they smell god awful. I just had an answer removed for flaming because I said turnips smell like a$$. Well they do, they are yummy but they smell awful.

So flaming? Hot topic?

Really I am curious if people really have a strong opinion on turnips. Well except the person I was responding to, she didn't seem to like them smell or otherwise. :p

So What Happened?

I like them with cheese, what am I saying I like anything with cheese. Thankfully so do my kids, I have a theory I could get them to eat liver if I put cheese on it. Haven't made them in forever because I can't stand the smell. It is like Uncle Barney came over and farted all night and you can't get the windows open. :(

Love all the answers. :)

Laura, tons of flowers. Ya know that was what was so strange about it being reported, the whole answer was meant to be funny. I know my family causes me fits of stress during the holidays. I like when people make light of it all so I did the same. I hate to say it but some people have no sense of humor.

Hmmm...

Wondering now about other 'controversial' veggies...

Broccoli?

Cauliflower?

These poor veggies cannot help it that they smell...

like a$$.

**sigh**

There are a few veggies that smell like a%# when they are being cooked. I don't know why someone would have a problem with that.

Unless I am confusing them with something else, I like them raw. I've never had them cooked, or smelled them cooked/cooking... so I wouldn't know about that, lol.
Turnip greens however, are pretty rank. I LOVE mustard greens though. :)

LMAO J.. I saw the title of your post and I knew it was you!!! LOL, you crack me up and I soooooooooooooo needed to laugh tonight! I have never had turnips and I refuse to even try. Just the name turns me off. Yeah I know that it's weird to not eat something just because of its name but that's me. My husband has a friend who traps animals all year round. a few weeks ago he caught a muskrat and gave it to my hubby. the entire skinned carcas. granted it was the size of a kitten it was still gross. I refused to try it simply because it has the word RAT in it's name. Earlier this year when he trapped a beaver and gave it to my hubby I at least tried a bite of it, wasnt to bad either...LOL, sorry to get off topic. Probably some weirdo got pi$$ed off because you said a$$. or it could have been the women who you mentioned, some people are just so touchy!

So funny, J.! I admit that the only time I will eat turnips is in that dish I detailed in that same thread. My SIL made that dish because my FIL had those exact veggies on hand (and he loves turnips and will eat them cooked any old way.) That's the ONLY way I will eat turnips, but when we make that dish at home, we leave the turnips out. (I've never bought a turnip to put in my own frig!)

I never thought about what they smell like...

You're so funny!

I'm also wondering about the "All the recent discussion about fish oil has prompted us to consult an expert!" thing on the home page. Really? ALL the recent conversation? There wasn't even a spate of it. 2 days later, 1 question goes up.

I think the overlords are getting finicky about what we choose to eat / talk about eating.

Turnips, are good pickled!
I like it that way.

Who'd think... turnips are so controversial!
It is the expectation of it... right? Of the one eating it.

I tried to roast turnips once and they turned out awful. I have been terrified ever since, but I keep wanting to try them. Cheese, you say? Hmmm...

This reminds me of my mom, she loved sauerkraut but was only allowed to make them when my dad was away b/c the smell made him physically sick.

The person who got offended, maybe she owns a turnip farm or something and is like a Dwight Schrute from The Office and his weirdness over beets.

Are you serious? Someone reported that??? However, would much rather have people disagreeing about turnips rather than all the political fighting that was going on for a while!
I have only had turnips raw and really like them.
I will have to try cooking them.

I've only had them roasted with butternut squash, potatoes, rutabages, and garlic and blended into very yummy soup. I've not even tried them any other way...now I might!

BWAH HAH HAHAHAHA!!!!

I DO have strong opinions about turnips. HENCE FORTH AND THUS FORTH TURNIPS SHALL BE REFERRED TO AS THE MAGIC ROOT. Mmmmm, they have such a wonderful spicy-cardboard taste. Delicioso!

Heh, heh, heh. Just kidding.

I'm with you on turnips. They taste like bottom. So does ((shudder)) okra. Blech.
