I finally got my 3 week old to sleep in a crib thanks to everyones advice but she will only sleep on her belly. I mean I will put her on her back and she will cryand cry but if i put her on her tummy she goes right to sleep. Is that ok! I mean I can't sleep when she sleeps on her belly because I have heard so many terrible things like suffocating and things like that!

What can I do next?

When my daughter (who is now 2) was an infant, I used one of those sleep positioners that was essentially two foam triangles connnected with a piece of fabric. She, like yours, was uncomfortable on her back but I found that she slept much better when I put her on her side, using the positioner to make sure she stayed that way. You could also use it as a transition method to get her accustomed to back-sleeping.

My son never slept on his back. I would put him on his tummy during the day and he slept great. Then at night I would be afraid to put him on his belly. But I like you wanted to just be able to sleep. so I went to his belly and he did fine. He was a strong baby and able to turn his head and hold his head up. But I had fear like you. He is now a crazy kid that will be 4 in December.

I know all the experts out there tell you absolutely never let your baby sleep on her belly....but ask parents (as opposed to experts, lol) and a great many of them will tell you that their kids slept on their tummies & came out just fine. At least that's the advice I got over & over again when my babies wouldn't sleep. I didn't try it with my first daughter, but I started putting my youngest daughter to sleep on her tummy as an infant and she's slept that way ever since--and she's now two. If you decide to let her continue to sleep on her tummy, just make sure you have a firm crib mattress, the sheet is tight so she can't get tangled, you have no extra blankets or stuffed animals in the crib, and you keep a monitor in the room with her at night.

Good luck!

Hi C.,
You have to decide what is right for you and your daughter but I don't think it is a good idea. Chances are your daughter would be fine, but what if she was one of the few who was'nt? The SIDS rate has dropped dramatically since the "back to sleep" campaign so it must help. Have you tried letting her sleep in her car seat? When my son was little, we put him in his car seat, in his crib. The car seat made him feel secure. He was sleeping through the night at six wks old! Once again you must find what is right for you, but please consider other options. Chances are that your daughter would be fine, but if she was'nt you would have to live with that forever. Good Luck!
