Hey moms,

Has anyone had their tubes tied? What was the procedure like? Is it painful? If you've had any experience with this procedure, either positive or negative, I'd like to hear it.

Thanks!

MC

I had my tubes tied 3 years ago after I had my son. I was a little sore for a few days after, but nothing major. For about a year afterwards I would get a pain where my incision is, but then it quit. The only thing I don't like is that my periods are heavier and my cramps are harder. Otherwise I like not having to use bc.

Had my tubal when I had my last baby which was C-sec so I didn't really notice what the pain was from. And actually they USED to cut and tie them...now they cut and cauterize them. The Essure procedure is less invasive, they insert a metal coil into your tubes and the tissue grows up around the coil, blocking your tubes. It takes longer to be effective, but it is a good non-surgical option. Check it out, definitely.

Side note...I LOVE having my tubal and wouldn't go back and change it for the world! I did have HEAVY abnormal bleeding after and had an endometrial ablation done later and now I only bleed a few drops on my period. The freedom I have from birth control is fantastic!!

I did have my tubes tied about 8 years ago. It was outpatient. Very minimal pain & discomfort. I haven't
noticed any other issues abnormal periods, cramps etc.

It was a relatively easy procedure I felt. Again that was 8 years ago. So i am sure now it's even smoother of a procedure.

I did it. The procedure was not as bad as the 2 C-sections with 1 uterine rupture that I had before! You'll be sore for a few days, then back to normal. The best thing about it is that it works. I got pregnant with an IUD--it is NOT the next best thing to sterilization. I did become more irregular with my cycle after the procedure, and got menstrual cramps again because I was no longer on the pill. The pill gave me liver tumors, so tubal ligation is still the best thing. Good luck--

After having four children in five years and the last pregnancy very stressful I had my tubes tied. done right after the fourth child was born. Think I should have waited and had it done through the 'trap door' as others but just went for it. Yeah, i was in a bit a pain for a day. Many opinions on the other. some went to a soccer game the same day other were laid up a couple of days.

BUT...we all agreed that atleast we knew that WE would never be pregnant again!. The husband can get fixed but if for whatever reason you remarry etc. then you are back to sqyuare one. However if the second husband wants children he can easily reverse his procedure and I am not sure a tubal can be reversed.

the messiness of preventing a pregancy isn't fun AND none f it worked for me. Low estrogen birth cpontrol, condoms whatever.

None the less a very individual choice. In retrospect I would have loved to have another child if I could have stayed not pregnant for a while. I loved being pregnant and babies.

Hi... I"m sure you've gotten all the information you need but have you considered getting an IUD? It's quick, virtually painless and almost 100% effective. There is a non-hormonal copper ring that last 10 years or the Mirena with low levels of estrogen that lasts 5 years. After doing research this seemed like the easiest way to go and be safe.

I have not had a tubal ligation but was considering it with my last pregnancy which was also my third C-section so it would've been easy to do. My only suggestion besides talking with your husband and your OB/GYN is do your research when I was considering it I did research and found out that there is a whole group of people that have post-tubal syndrome and the side effects sounded aweful-not worth it to me and in talking with my OB I decided against it. I also have considered the Essure procedure which is much less invasive and seems to have a lot less side effects. Best of luck in your decision.

I would personally recommend a procedure called ESURE. It is SO awesome and is not nearly as painful and intrusive as having your tubes tied. Google it for more info. It will be 2 years in March since I had it done. Also a friend of mine had it done this year and was VERY pleased with the results also! Good luck!

Hello Mc, I had my tubes tied in 1986. It was right after my last child was born, and it wasn't much more discomfort that just giving birth. The only problem I had was an allergic reaction to betadine which is what they use to prep for surgery, so the skin had a second degree burn everywhere that the betadine was. This is a very rare reaction, so don't worry about that, I'm just saying that even with the complication it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Good luck.

To M.C

I have had my tubes tied and I was very nerveous about it. But actually it was pretty easy. I had the prodedure done and than went home and hung out by the pool with a few friends but it was easier than I expected. The only bad thing I have to say with my tubes being tied I had a lot heavier periods after that. Good luck to you

I had my first child as an emergency c-section, thereby making my next 2 children also c-sections. When I was pregnant with my 3rd the doctor said there were increased risks with a 4th c-section. My husband and I had been undecided between having 3 or 4 kids, so this seemed a reasonable time to stop. Since I was having a c-section anyways they were able to tie my tubes right then and said there would be no increased pain or extended recovery with adding the tubal. They were right. In fact, my 3rd c-section with the tubal was my fastest recovery of the 3. That being said, though, if you were only getting the tubal and they weren't in there already anyways, I'm sure there is pain and recovery time associated with that alone. I've also heard that menopause tends to come a little earlier when you've had your tubes tied and I've also noticed that I have 7-8 days of flow with about 20 days inbetween whereas I used to be 5 days with 23 days inbetween. That's a little annoying, but I can't be sure it's because of the tubal or just changes from having 3 kids in 3 years!

Hi MC!!!

I'm getting mine done on this coming Friday through the belly button. A very close girlfriend of mine went in for hers on a Friday and was back to work that next Monday with very little discomfort. I've never had any type of surgery, never have been put under and never even had an IV! (I refused one during the birth of our child). To say I'm a little nervous is an understatement but I'm comfortable with my doctor, his abilities, his track record and his genuine care for me personally. If you want my advice, make an appointment to talk about it with your doctor and go from there. I will say that I did look up the Essure procedure and found that to look pretty interesting. Had I not already scheduled this surgery or if there was a provider in my town who did that procedure, I'd probably go for that instead.

Anyway, wish me luck for Friday and I'll say a little prayer for you that you come to the decision that will be best for you and your family.

I had my tubes tied through my belly button about 6 months after my second daughter was born. It was done on a Friday and I was back to work on Monday. If I remeber right, I was only in "surgery" for about one hour and was leaving for home within an hour of coming out of recovery. It was very quick and not a lot of pain involved. The recovery itself wasn't bad, as long as our almost 2 year old didn't bounce on my stomach! There wasn't a whole lot of pain, except at the incision point. They don't really tie the tubes, the burn the ends closed. So, in reality, the only cuts you experience are in the belly button and muscle tissue to get into the stomach area.

My only advice, would be to make sure that you are really done having children. It was probably a year later that we began to regret the decision to have them done. We're now considering and investigating options to have them undone (which they can be - at a full expense to the patient). For us, the decision was made after a difficult pregnancy and I was in the middle of post-partum depression as well. Looking back, we wish someone had advised us to wait to make the decision.

MC,
I had my tubes tied during my last C-section so I can't give you any info if it is painful or not. I can say my baby is 4 months old and I am having some regrets over having my tubes tied. With that said be sure 110% that this is what you want to do. J.

I went in and just had my tubes tied in 2005 since my husband wimped out on his vasectomy the day before he was supposed to have it. We were 2 years into our marriage and he had 2 kids and I had 3, both of our little ones were in diapers and about to start potty training. We decided not to have an "our" child and opted for a puppy instead; hence, I got my tubes tied...lol. Not a big deal. I did have to have one extra small cut on the other lower side since the one side had too much scar tissue from my two previous c-sections. So, I ended up with a tiny cut inside my belly button, one little one about the area of the right ovary and one little one about the area of the left ovary. I can barely see the scars at all now. I was up and moving after a day, but I did pretend that I couldn't get up and move around for a few days...hey, don't judge, I have five kids and a husband who is lazy...I milked it for all it was worth...lol! It's an easy surgery. My doctor was great. If you are in the Warren/Detroit/Macomb County area, I can give you her number. She is out of the Henry Ford System, that I know of.

MC,

I had my tubes tied, but it was done during a c-section. I noticed that my periods were heavier and irregular after. I also got pregnant again after. I had them retied and more of the fallopian tubes were cut out also. I have noticed after the 2nd time of "tube-tying" my periods are much more normal now. I don't know what changed the 2nd time around.

Hello,

I got my tubes tied 3 years ago in February. I remember being a little nervous. I have never had surgery where they actually had to cut me. I remember them telling me to count backwards and then I remember waking up in recovery. When I came around in there I maxxed out the motrin they could give me. I had the surgery when my fourth baby was only 6 weeks old. So I had a little cramping from that as well. I remember being really tired afterwards. The pain for me was like bad menstrual cramps. That really is the only way I can explain it.

I didn't think I would like having them tied after the fact. Now that I look back and my youngest is 3 today. I'm glad that I got them done. I love kids but 4 is enough for our family.

A Little About Me: SAHM of 4, ages (boy 8, girl 5, girl 4, and another boy 3). They are the light of my life and my world.

I had mine done, but I had them done at the same time as my c-section. My OB said they don't actually tie them, they actually cut them - a tubal ligation is what he called it. They said my sides might be a bit sore, along with my incision for a couple of days, but that was about it.

Have you looked into the other procedure that they do in the OB's office - no surgery? I just googled it and I think it's called Essure. I know my OB's office does it and was promoting it pretty heavily (advertising it) for a while - it was on the 'hold' music when you called them and I considered doing it - probably would have had I not had to have another c-section.

MC -
It is sooooo much easier and insurance savvy price wise to send Hubby off to the 'tube tying store' than for you to have to go through this procedure. The recovery time for Hubby is so much quicker for him than for you. That is my suggestion....this has worked wonders for our family --- along with many of our friends. Remember this is a joint decision between you and him....do not let your family sway your thought process. Best of luck.

The agreement I had with my husband is that if I had to have my second child c-section, I would have my tubes tied. Since I didnt, he had a vasectomy.

Of course the decision is up to you, but my husband was in and out of the doctors office in less than 2 hours. He followed the doctor's directions and did not have any problems. In fact, he had the best golf game he ever had 5 days after the procedure.

My opinion is that us women go throug a lot to have children. They are a blessing. But men can take some responsibility in prevention.

To sum it up 2 hours (for men) vs. out patient in a hospital for women.

Again the decision is between you and your husband.

I wish you well in deciding what is best for you.

I had my tubes tied when i had my gallbladder removed in june of 2008. it was the best thing i ever did! I no longer have back pain and bloating with my periods and they are not as heavy as they used to be either.
My mom had hers done back in the old days and she had worse periods but times have changed!!!!

I have no regrets in having it done yes you will be sore for about 2 weeks while you do most of your healing but it is done through laproscopy or vaginal depending on your surgeon.
