I had it done about 5 mos ago after I had a c-section to have my daughter. So far no problems at all. I probably wouldn't have done it if I wasn't having a c-section though. Then it would have been up to my husband!
I am just wondering about any experiences with tubal ligation. I am considering it but have heard of people having many issues such as weight gain, fibroids, heavy bleeding...
Thanks so much to everyone who responded! I'm seeing my OB/Gyn tomorrow and will talk to her about both tubal ligation and Essure though I think Essure may be the way to go. I would have been due to get the Depo shot again later this month but I will not be getting it. I will allow it to get out of my system first and for the next few months my husband and I will use multiple over the counter birth control methods until I start getting a period again and have had some time to make sure I'm certain that I want to do something permanent. I am 33 and feel 99.9% sure that I do not want anymore children. My husband has 2 boys and I have 1 daughter and we have no children together but are okay with that. My daughter is 14 and I am not at all interested in starting all over with an infant but still it is a major life-changing decision. Thanks again!

I had it done 17 years ago and never had a problem. I did have heavy periods and fibroids later on but that comes with aging also.
This is a toughie. I had a TL w/ rings in '95, two years after the birth of my 2nd (and last) daughter. I was "fine and normal" for about a year, although I did notice what seemed to be more hormonal changes (skin, hair, nails...) which the DR. agreed. I did then have two D&Cs to try and reduce my heavy bleeding, clotting....stay-at-home periods. Just this last summer I finally had the partial hysty that the Dr. had suggested all along. Turned out I had adanomyosis and lots of scarring from the D&Cs. Can I say it was from the tubal? No. Did things change for me after? Yes. I did not have a weight gain issue tho'....! Do what is best for YOU. However, I suggest the man thing!
At 33 I had a prceedure called Essure.

I had about 2 days of feeling really bloated.
That's it. I was at my son's soccer game the very next morning. No lingering issues...nothing.
I would highly recommend it.
Best Wishes!
That is major surgery - why would you want to put your body through that...not to mention the scar the size of a c-section. So much simpler for the husband to get snipped. It is done in the dr. office, local anesthetic, quicker recovery.

I had my tubes tied in 1991 and had no problems whatsoever. No bleeding, cramping, pain, nothing. It was the best thing ever. Not having to worry about birth controlwas nad still is great. Especially as I get older and hear of many people who wind up pregnant later in life because thier cycles get irregular closer to menapause.
Working grandmother of the most amazing granddaughter ever!
I had a tubal ligation in August 1999, the only bad thing I can say about it is that it is definitely permanent. I've remarried and my current husband has no children and I have 3 wonderful children. He really wants a child of his own, but because I got the tubal I cannot get pregnant without getting surgery which only gives me a 30% chance of becoming pregnant, we are looking into other methods but financially we really cannot afford invitro or any other form of conceiving. If you are absolutely sure that you no longer want to have anymore children then this is the right decision. As for side effects I didn't experience anything only sore for couple days after. There is no scarring only a very small incision by your pelvic line and in your belly button area, which unless you point it out no one will be able to see that anything was done. Good luck on your decision, I hope all works well for you.
Hi, C.,
Today (27th) is my 47th bday. I had my tubes tied 16 yrs ago, the day after my son was born, when I was about to turn 31. My husband and I had 5 kids between us and we thought that was enough. I experienced absolutely no side effects. All that changed was that I didn't have to worry anymore if I was pregnant each month. I couldn't take bc pills and the other birth control methods didn't interest me. I had no regrets on having this done.

Only if you are sure you want to do this, go ahead. I had it done a year ago and have had no problems. Minor pain after surgery but nothing pain killer couldn't handle. Just remember this is permanent.
I just found out there is a new procedure out call Essure. Its done in the doctors office. Its less invasive. You can look it up on the web. Good Luck.
It's NOT a scar "the size of a C-section". Just had it done this week. They did a laproscopy, two small incisions at the pelvic line and the belly button. A lot of pain immediately afterwards, but once I could take Percocet it was brought under control nicely (within a couple of hours.)
Tubal ligation is simply barring the egg from entering the uterus. It doesn't affect *anything* else - hormones, fibroids, etc. because you're just changing a structure, not removing or adding anything. Whatever else might go on is, as others have said, a function of getting older or a problem that already existed.
I've never had a single problem. Not having to take hormones is a big relief! I can't imagine how that procedure could lead to the problems you mention.
I had it done when my last child was born. It was a planned c-section so I figured while I was already open for that to do the procedure at the same time. I have had no problems at all with it.
If I wasn't having the c-section, I think I would have opted for something less invasive like essure.
I'm not sure how long ago this post was made, but I had a tubal two years ago after my fourth child. I am now 30 years old, and having a tubal was the biggest mistake of my life. I have severe pain, bleeding, cramping, and the mood swings are horrible. I can't stand to be around myself at time it's so bad. I am depressed a lot and seem to cry all the time for no apparent reason. My husband wonders why I have no sex drive anymore, and the truth is, until doing research the past few weeks, I had no idea either. Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome is very real regardless of what your doctor may tell you. The symptoms are real and the way you feel is real. If I had to do it over, I would NEVER have gotten my tubal.
I had one after our 4th child in 2005 immediately following a c-section. I've had three so the pain was no more than usual in the abdominal section. My dental hygenist had told me horror stories of her mensies after hers but I was no longer able to do any type of birth control due to BP issues. My cycle did change a bit the 1st two years. I had never really experienced cramping before and especially not during ovulation. My cycle was a couple days longer and heavier than I was used to but things have gotten back to normal now.
Hi C.,
I just had it done 5 months ago. No differences other than a slightly heavier period the first couple of days of menstration. My ob/gyn says that's normal for about the first year or so post surgery. I don't have any stronger cramps or anything like that. I healed very fast and I actually LOST 15lbs. My scar is about a half an inch that's barely visabile.
I'm still very happy with my decision to have this surgery and I highly recommed it for permanent birth control.
The hardest part is deciding on a method. Good luck with you decision!
Had the procedure done after my daughter was born (18 years ago). Never thought about it but I did get fibroids (Actually one BIG one), heavy bleeding, huge clots every month since then. That cause me to be anemic too! Praying for menopause to start! The weight well that was an issue for a while too. But in my 50's and that's a problem anyway. One OB/GYN told me to have a hysterectomy but I didn't want to be pushed into menopause 4 years ago. They can't just take the fibroid since it's so big, they'd need to do more. Haven't been to a OB/GYN for a diagnosis since then. SCARED! Don't want surgery. Can't afford to take off 8=10 weeks, being the only person earning any $. Let us know what you decide and how it turns out. Good luck
I'm 26 years old and had a very hard pregnancy with my son (2nd child). I was diabetic and he was still born and in the NICU for 6 weeks so i decided to get a ligation. It was the best and the worst decision I ever made. I'm happy that I can't get pregnant and go through the hardship I went through with my son. However, due to the fact that it is a lot of pressure on some of your other organs a lot can happen. With mine, i had so much pressure on my stomach and intestines that now a little over 2 years later, I have a hard time passing stools. Also, I gained almost 50 lbs! it was hard to get the weight off and I am still struggling to maintain it! Since know one can say the hard stools is from old age in my case since I'm only 26, I would have a long talk with your doctor and do as much research as possible into this and other options BEFORE making a decision.
I had my tubes cut, tied and burned after my daughter was born 6 yrs ago. I had NO side affects. Well, ok, I had one. Sex was better. More O's, more desire, more pleasure.
