We were supposed to travel to my in laws which are 3 hours away this weekend! With the talk about the weather being bad all weekend up here mainly on Sunday which is when we were coming home. I don't feel like chancing it in the waether so I cancelled our trip. Am I just being a baby or what?? Mind you I have two small childeren that would be with us!! Just thought I get other ideas on this. Thanks S.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of your thoughts I feel so much better. Pretty sad I don't even know if the roads were bad or not we hibernated all weekend. We had a great family weekend watching movies and playing board games. I even got most of my daughters photo/scrapbook done. Thanks again S.

I do not think that you are a baby at all S.. Everyone should take the upcoming weather very seriously after the Jan. 12, 2007 ice storm. I have a 26 year old mentally challenged son and I would not make the trip with him either. You are playing it smart not dumb.....S.

A little about me: I am 49, disabled, married for almost 10 years and as I said I have a 26 year old mentally challenged son who lives at home.

Yesterday, because UMKC did not cancel classes, I had to drive all the way from 147th & Antioch to UMKC to teach. On the highway, a snow plough truck wizzed by me going about 50 mph and threw a ton of slush under my front wheels. I jack-knifed, spun and ended up stopped in the far left lane, perpendicular to on-coming traffic. I sat there watching this white SUV barreling toward my car, praying that she could stop, thinking "no, no, no, no!" Thankfully, she did stop - about three yards from me. I blew her a kiss, and extricated myself and cried from relief all the way to school.

On the way, I saw about six fender benders, including a four-car mess in the median ditch. One of my students had nearly as harrowing an experience.

SO... do I think you're crazy? NO. My parents could be looking at my body right now, thinking, "we're not supposed to outlive our kids." I'm sure your family will understand.

Alternatively, you might check out the bus system. They are very heavy vehicles and fair better in bad weather.

S.,

The safety of your children should be your number one priority. Your in-laws may be a little upset for a while, but should understand. I would not hesitate to keep my family at home and never have!
Hope all went well and know that you did the right thing. You are a good mom!

Hey S.!

My kids are about the same age as yours (my son just turned 5 and my daughter will be 1 next week) and I wouldn't want to chance getting out in this weather either. I don't like driving in this stuff. Although they are not forcasting it to be too bad here, ya never know. I think you are a wise mom for wanting to stay home. Now if it was just you & your husband it would be a different story. But I know I wouldn't want to get my 2 little ones out and chance it.

But if you decide to go ahead & make this road trip just keep your eye on the weather before coming home. Best of luck! :)

I know your inlaws want you to come but you are smart to cancel the trip....I had to do this one time and I am sure they understand. If they don't, don't worry about it. You and your children will be safe and warm and no wrecks.
Smart girl...........

Hi,
Personally, I do cancel events and trips for bad weather and illness. With the weather, it just isn't worth the risk. When you watch the news and you see the stories about the people who get stuck or in accidents and you see the footage, don't you think- what were they thinking? In my opinion, it just isn't worth the risk to drive in bad weather. Trips can be rescheduled.

Go with your gut instinct. The weather is not going to be pleasant driving Sunday and Monday. Reschedule for another time and hope the weather is better. Safety is your number one concern.

No, you are not being a baby. THe way our weather is here, you never know what will happen. Just like the ice storm last year, they said it was going to be ice, then turn to snow.....well, I never did see any snow. For now, they are saying it will be mostly liquid, and not much ice, You just never know. Just reschedule your trip, or have your in laws come here. Tell them they are welcome to come see you and you just don't want to travel and chance the weather with the little ones.

How does your husband feel about the trip if he is ok driving and feels confident that he can get his family to and from home safely then I would put my confidence in him and go. If weather gets bad you just stay an extra night. Weather in Illinois changes so fast that it might not even snow and you could miss out on a really good weekend away.

I wouldn't do it. I am not usually a baby about traveling with the kiddo-mine is 2, but I wouldn't chance safety at all. I hear it is supposed to be pretty icey. Not worth it. Good decision.

There's nothing wrong with playing it safe. My husband and son (13yrs) are on their way to Illinois this weekend. They are coming back on Monday, which looks okay that day, but I would of preferred they stayed in town this weekend. I wouldn't have risked it either with your 2 small children,
you did the right thing by staying home. I'll probably be home most of the weekend with my 10yr. old daughter and almost 2 yr. old son. Be safe!
