Traveling to High Altitudes - Peru

I am traveling with my 21-month-old daughter to Peru this summer and was hoping to get some advice with regards to preventing altitude sickness. I am aware of the coca tea which is used widely in Peru as a natural remedy, as well as staying hydrated, and ibuprofen in case of a headache. Our pediatrician feels she'll be fine as long as she stays hydrated. Any advice from anyone who's traveled to high altitudes with little ones?

Hi! I was in Peru while I was 5 months pregnant. Your daughter will be fine. Make sure she drinks plenty of water. The first day I was in the high altitude in Cusco, I did feel funny but the next day I was back to normal. I don't know if you have been there before but it is a beautiful country. Have fun!

I would NOT give her Coca tea. Coca leaves are the basis for cocain, and they do contain that chemical. If you were to drink coca tea before a drug test, it would come back positive that you'd done cocain!

I definitely agree about having her drink extra fluid. Go slow, and let her rest often. Same for you!

I went to Mammoth when I was 8 months pregnant. My ob told me if i was concerned to break up the trip... slowly over a couple of days change altitude. I had no issues and made the trip in one chunk.
My daughter has had some interesting personality changes during our trips up high. CRANKY! We have gone skiing every year since she was born. She also is more likely to get sick for some reason. If we are near anyone sick a week before we go, she'll get it there. And she is not a kid who usually gets sick. I wish I had more remedies for you. Have fun!

I don't know high the altitude is, but you may want to take it slow and have an plan ready just in case she doesn't do well. We took our children to a high altitude place didn't plan and all and they ended up getting sick (throwing up, daughter almost passed out). It is good that you are planning ahead, you should also ask your doctor if there is any medication that can help if she doesn't do well.

I go to big bear and get altitude headaches no matter how much water I drink. I think part of it may be the individual.

Not sure if giving Coca Tea is good for a 21 month old but definitely staying hydrated is important and rest on the first day to acclimate to the altitude. Altitude sickness creeps up on you so resting and doing a lot of physical movements on the first day will help. When we were in Cusco our hotel had "soroche pills" for altitude sickness. We never needed it but the local pharmacy had it, I wouldn't know what to recommend for a child. I have been to Cuzco twice and the first times with my young cousins. The youngest was four and the oldest was 12 who was fine the whole trip, but the middle one who was 8 at the time and got really sick. A doctor was called and she was given an oxygen tank to use. She never saw Macchu Picchu unfortunately because she was ill. One thing just be on the safe side, check with your hotel if they have doctor they use for problems with altitude sickness. Best of luck and have a wonderful trip!
