Transition to Sippy Cup

My nine month old daughter has started to lose interest in her bottles and lean more towards solid food. I want to encourage this but at the same time I know that her formula is still the most important part of her diet. I thought that maybe a change to a sippy cup might renew her interest, but am unsure of how to transition. I've offered her water out of them before and she sort of gets the idea, but never drinks very much. She mostly chews on it and bangs it like a drum. Any pointers?

What can I do next?

K.,

Nuby makes a sippy cup with a soft rubber tip on it. its soft like a nipple on a bottle. i used them with my son and he stopped taking bottles at 9 months and has been on sippy cups since then. we are now using the hard tip ones though

I tried 7 different sippy cups (nuby, avent, etc...) my daughter would just play with them and not drink them. I finally found one that she loves and I will swear by it now. You can get it at Babies 'R' Us. It's the take-n-toss brand, called the "Little Trainer Sippy Cup". So cheap, and so wonderful!

My son did the same thing. I would give him the sippy cups with the soft nipples to help the transition and he love to chew on them. Eventually I have had to take them away because all he did was chew holes in the nipple and spill everywhere. Try giving your daughter her milk out of the sippy cup...not just water. Some kids don't really care for the water and they don't drink too much of it. Eventually she will get the hang of the sippy cup. Since she don't drink much at one time just keep the cup close so that she can continue to go to it and get her more to drink.

I agree with the previous response: it's never too early to start sippy cups (my son fell in love with them at 6 months).

My son lost interest in his bottles early. Believe me, it's normal that your daughter is playing with the cup. Sometimes, they become "drumsticks" or great noisemakers. My son misplaces about 3 of his cups a day because he likes to "see them fly" or "see how far they fall." LOL :)

Transition her to the cup by giving her the formula in her cup in place of maybe one to two bottles AND give it to her when she eats. You can put juice or water in it at that point.

Hopefully, she'll get the idea that the cup is for her to drink out of.

try giving the cup to her as the very first thing when she wakes up...that is when she is the thirstiest...and be consistent...eventually she will realize that the stuff in there is pretty good!! haha (and don't think it's too soon for a cup...my daughter started taking hers at 7 months with a bottle before bed)

good luck!!

I agree with the previous post, try giving the formula in the sippy and see what happens. My son showed a lot of interest in the sippy around 9 months also, but still had a hard time figuring it out. So, I gave him his formula in the sippy and what he didn't finish I put in a bottle (so that he would finish it, like you, I knew his formula is very important). Eventually, he started getting use to the sippy and by the time he was one I said bye bye to the bottles.

good luck

If she has an interest in foods try the baby cereals and use the formula to mix in.

Try the Avent sippy cups. They have a soft spout like a bottle. Later, you can change the spout for a hard plastic one without buying more cups.
