My son is almost 8 months old. Still no teeth, but he is gumming the heck out of cheerios, crackers and mashed potatoes. I would like to have him drink something along with the foods he is eating, is it too soon for a sippy cup? If not, any suggestions for a type to use? He is using Advent bottles-is there a conversion kit for this brand? Any suggestions or advice is appreciated! Thanks!

So What Happened?

I just want to thank all of you moms out there who took the time to give me advice about the sippy cup. I went with the Nuby brand. We have only been using it for about a week, time will tell. He will drink from it, if we hold it for him! He doesn't really get the hand to mouth thing, yet! But, I think if we use it at every meal or snack time, he will get it quick! Thanks again!

Hi M.. I think now is the perfect time to try the sippy cup. My daughter is 6 mos old and we started with her about 2 weeks ago and it's working perfectly. I started with a latex nipple sippy cup for the transition and found that it worked great. We have moved on to a plastic nipple and she is doing great and actually seems to like it. My daughter doesn't have teeth either, so no worries there. Hope this was helpful!

I started off at 11 months with formula in a sippy cup.. My son really wanted nothing to do with it and enjoyed his bottle. When we moved to milk we tried the sippy again with no luck. At about 13 months, one day he took the sippy and I never went back to the bottle after that.
Good luck

I started both of my kids on sippy cups when they were around four months old. Usually just water, sometimes a little juice. I think that 8 months is a perfect time to introduce the sippy cup, it may take a little time to catch on, but will eventually get there, and then you will be that much closer to making the bottle disappear when you are ready.

My sons first tooth didn't break until close to a year old. He was drinking from sippy cups around 9 months, and a pro by a year. I can't remember what kind he liked best, as he's 5 now. We just played guess and check...buy a new sippy cup, let him use it for one to two weeks--if he likes it we kept it if he couldn't catch on to how it worked it went away. Best of luck!

When my daughter was 7 months old, I weaned her to some sippy cups I got at Wal-Mart. I think they were a generic Wal-Mart brand and they cost 88cents each. They were 8 oz. and had a clear silicone spout that looked like a sippy cup spout but was soft like a nipple. She was thrilled that she could get enough flow from them without them dripping down her face. They're awesome!

Yes you can start him on a sippy cup, the Avent bottles do have a conversion kit. You can try offering him water to drink with his foods.

Don't worry about the teeth my oldest didn't get his first tooth until he was 11mos old!!!!

Hope this helps!!!

I would keep trying from here on out. I started at the 8.5 month mark too :)

I have a couple different designs she loves the playtex with the rubber top thats clear and like a nipple but a sippy spout. They are at walmart for under $4.each , Shes tried advent too and some others( she does better when theres a rubbery surface to the tops it seems!) ... I just bought a lot of them at the thrift store that someone donated all newer like no marks or anything just a couple dings lol....to the sides.
So I thought well heck they must have had issues with trying diff ones too LOL!

Nuby makes a great sippy cup with a silicone spout that is similar to a nipple, and shaped somewhat like a bottle. It's the only one my son would use. (and I've tried every sippy out there!)

Personally, I would prefer a sippy cup with 2 handles (one on each side of the cup. Those are good to teach them to hold on and not to spill as easily. If traveling, my daughter and a friend used ones that could not accidentally spill in the car or whatever they were traveling in. Both are good ideas and both have lids on them.

There used to be a sippy cup "nipple" that fit on the bottles and handles - my youngest is 3 so I don't know if they still have them or not. I recommend a soft spout style with handles (preferably ones that can later be removed) and you probably want to start with water in it without the stopper so he'll get used to what the heck it is. Once he starts actually sucking on it you can stick the plug back in and start trying other things in the cup - just make sure you're not letting him fill up on juice from the cup, you can put his formula/breastmilk in it too. I definitely don't think he's too young.

I breastfed our daughter and she took to a sippy cup at 5 months. She was VERY picky about her cup, though. We ended up with almost a dozen different types before we found one that she would take. It was a Nuby brand with the silicone spout and top, soft on her face, like when she was nursing. BEWARE, though, once he gets his teeth and can chomp down on the spout good, it will pull out with some effort - makes a fine mess! That's when we had to switch to a slightly harder topped cup. good luck!

Hi M.. If he can hold a sippy cup, he can try it. Be prepared for the mess, but sure give it a try. He'll probably like it. Especially in these hot summer months!

My son never took a bottle and we started a sippy around 8 or 9 month with water in it. He didn't get how to tip it since he didn't use bottles so we had to start with the nubby cups with straws or tip it for him.

Go for the cup. Avent does sell a conversion cup top but they are expensive. Also, I just found out that Avent bottles have BHP in them. If your son won't take the sippy, try a straw cup. One of my sons didn't drink from the sippy but loved straws. Take -N- toss cups were pretty leak proof even upside down (we reuse them, not toss them).

I have 4 kids and all started a sippy cup at different times. I have heard that 6months is a ggod time to start introducing one.....so 8months is definately ok to try. He may or may not show any interest in it. It is usually best to try his favorite drinks in the sippy cup and least favorite in the bottles. I used Avent sippy cups with one of my children....they work well but have more separate pieces to wash.....but also have interchangeable parts from sippy (soft spout)to sports (firm spout). With my last 2 children I have used Playtex insulated cups and like them ok.....I don't always clean mine right away and sometimes have isuued getting the lids clean in the crevices.....but wasn't an issue when I had a dishwasher. Sometimes you have to try different brands just to find one that your child will take. My youngest started with Gerber cups because he didn't like the others......some kids are picky and others aren't. Good luck and God bless!

We started my son on a sippy cup at 6 months. He did great with it. He was still young enough that he didn't have separation anxiety from his bottle. I did nurse most of the time however. He would get two bottles a day with me nursing the other times. If your son will take a sippy cup, I would do it. I have never heard of a conversion kit for something like this. We started off by giving him the sippy cup first thing in the morning because we knew that was when he was the hungriest. I think it was the playtex brand. The cups have soft spouts therefore the kids can "gum" the spouts without hurting their gums. In addition the handles are attached to the lid instead of the side of the cup. This made it easier for our son because his hands were closer to the part he wanted to put in his mouth. I am sure your child puts everything in their mouth too. He really liked to hold the cup. I think he was proud of himself. Sorry this is so long. I really think I need some adult interaction. ha ha

Great that he is using Avent, because yes there is a conversion kit. It is GREAT!!!! My son went from bottle to the sippy cup instantly. The conversion kit comes with a handle part that you just put on the bottle before screwing on the cap and a sippy cup top that you replace the nipple with. It is pretty much drip proof. It was so easy, and I was still able to use the bottle that I had already spent a fortune on. :) It was perfect for him just starting out and learning about sippy cups. The drinking spout is just the right softness. I think I started him around 8 months as well. I got all my conversion supplies at Babies R Us.
Hope this helps!

Oh I'd absolutely let him practice. Even if he doesn't do it well, you are helping him develop his gross motor skills. If he is already using Avent, they have a training cup that would be perfect for him. Just put water or juice in it for the meantime until he gets the hang of it. Bottles or breast needs to be a familiar place that isn't quite so intimidating. After he catches on how to do it, incorporate his milk into the cup. Best wishes!

I don't think it is to soon to start with a sippy cup. I liked Tommy Tippy. It is slightly rounded on the bottom and if it tips over rights itself, there is also less leakage.

When we introduced the sippy, we first just gave it to our daughter without anything in it. This way she could just get used to the cup, holding it, etc. Then we added a little water and then later milk. I think letting them 'play' with it at first is helpful in helping them get comfortable with it.

I really prefer the Gerber cups over the Avent. The Avent ones seem to leak a bit.

Good luck!
