Ok, sorry to be gross but we're all ladies here, eh? I am 39.5 weeks and had my membranes stripped on Thursday (39 wks). On Saturday morning I thought I lost my whole mucous plug. However, since Saturday morning more and more and more mucous has been coming out. My question is, how big is this thing???? And how much mucous is supposed to come out??? I'd say in total it's been equivalent to about a solid tablespoon all together. Is this normal??? For some reason I thought it would be small!!! Not so much blood like the day I was stripped, but still tinged brown. Wish there was a manual of all the down and dirty things you need to know that no one talks about with pregnancy and labor, LOL!

What can I do next?

Yeah there's a lot of mucus! Gross amounts in my opinion (I've had 2 babies). If you are concerned you can always put a call into your ob, but it sounds normal to me. As long as you feel ok, feel the baby moving, and aren't having any major hands/feet/face swelling all of a sudden, you're fine. You should be in the hospital having that baby any day now, congratulations!!!

Ask your hubby to bring sushi to the hospital the 2nd night. And kick everyone out of the room so you guys can have a yummy dinner alone with your new baby! We did that after both babies and it was so wonderful. After being sushi-deprived for 9 months it tasted SO good!!! If sushi isn't your thing have him get whatever your fave is so you don't have to eat hospital food that night. My hubby also brought a really nice bottle of wine - he's just good like that. :) Of course I could only have about a half of a glass since I had no tolerance anymore and was nursing, but that half glass of good wine with our sushi was just kickass! He put some music on his computer and our little baby slept while we ate...good times!

The mucus plug is actually pretty big. It's not uncommon to have a tablespoon or more. When it's tinged with blood, you know that labor is right around the corner. If it's brown right now expect to see it become more red in the next few hours or day.

It's crazy that there are so many books about parenting but so few that give actual details about what to expect in the end stages of labor and delivery. You're right, maybe some of us mamas should get together and write a very detailed, totally TMI book about what you should really expect when you're expecting, lol!

It can come out in a big glob or in small amounts over weeks leading up to delivery but if it has some signs of blood in it that is the bloody show stay home because labor is on its way..

Sounds totally normal to me. Usually the "mucus plug" comes out as just a bunch of slimy, stringy mucus and never remotely resembles a plug. It's called a "mucus plug" because it serves as a plug to keep bacteria/viruses out of the birth canal. Best wishes as prepare to meet your baby. Your life is about to change forever as you plunge into parenthood. Remember even when things are difficult and overwhelming over the next few months, you'll never want to go back to the way things were before you became a mother. Praying for you today to have a healthy baby and a smooth labor and delivery. Relax and enjoy what each day may bring. R., Nurse Midwife Mom of 3.
